According to Dan McCaffery's book about Tommy Burns, Bill Lang was 20-1 when he challenged Burns for the title.
The database has a much different record and not just beacuse it is missing some bouts. The database has several losses on his record when McCaffery says there was just one.
Either the fights on his record in the database are wrong, WRongly datated and actually take place later in his career, or McCaffery was wrong.
The database is for sure wrong about the date Lang defeated Bob Fitzsimmons. I will change it after my post.
Any one able to shed some light? We may need to do some major re-editing on some of these heavyweights from the early 19th century. I am finding some reports that don't match our database.
Bill Lang's record does not match what I have read...
ON second look the database is correct about the date of the Fitzsimmons fight, but still is off from other reports about him being 20-1 when he foguht Burns. I do know he for sure lost to Jack Johnson before he fought Burns.
Speaking of Burns the database is missing many of his early fights. He turned pro in 1900 not 1902 thus some bouts are missing. I will add them later myself.
I also know Bill Squires defeated Jem ROche by a 4th round KO before he fought Burns but the date is unknown.
Jack Palmer also won the British Middleweight title in 1902 but I don't know who he beat. He won the British heavyweight title he lost to Gunner Moir by beating Ben Taylor in 1903 but I don't know the exact day or by how he won the fight so I did not add it to his record.
Jewey Smith also beat Ben Taylor.

6 Pack - I've checked Bill Squires record and found that he beat Jem Roche (TKO4) on 30th April 1908 in Dublin, Ireland. This was before his
second fight against Tommy Burns.
Also, there are several of Jack Palmer's fights missing from 'boxrec'. I have a list of 40+ professional contests (not including exhibitions).
