In order to compete outside of the U.S., you have to notify your LBC president, or registration chairman. You and your coach will also have to have insurance coverage for the entire time you are competing. You will also need a letter of invitation from the country you will be competing in. All of this has to be done at least 30 days prior to your trip. Once you return, the result of your competiton (win or loss) needs to be reported to USA Boxing within 10 days.

The rules are slightly different for international club/group member competitions with Mexico and Canada bordering provinces and cities. They are not quite as strict. See the USA Boxing rulebook for more information.

Green - How much experience do you have? For international competition you really should have done very well in a national competition(s). Most U.S. boxers that compete in international competitions have 50 or more bouts of experience. Christopher Downs may have had less than 50 bouts before the Pan Am qualifier and he definitely had less than that number before his first interntational competition in 2005. Downs started boxing in 2003, but has won several national tournaments and has had about 20 bouts at national tournaments. I believe Michael Hunter had fewer than 20 bouts when he competed overseas in 2006. It can be done, but it is rare.

Boxing internationally on your own is most complicated. A country has to issue an invitation, even if for an international club meet (excluding Mexico and Canada). I often get requests from other countries looking to come here or to host our teams. I have never had a request for just one boxer. What club do you box for and how much experience have you had?
