Ernesto Marcel

Post by nobudius »

Hello folks, as I am new to this board. Been reading many of the past threads with great interest.

I came across a copy of Marcel vs. Arguello a while back, & marvelled at the way he confused the younger Alexis. Slick, slick, slick-although Arguello had his moments. He countered him beautifully throughout the fight. Anybody have any information on why he retired after this bout? And was it a foregone conclusion on his decision prior to the bout?

The only other fight of Marcel I have is with Duran. Going from memory, the fight came to an abrupt end by TKO, although I don't remember if Marcel was actually hurt. Would like to see more bouts of Marcel, but it doesn't seem like many fights exist of him.

First off welcome aboard.
I have the Duran fight and was impressed with Marcel as well. Very slick and willing to mix it up with the young tiger that was Roberto Duran. Haven't seen the Arguello bout yet but am keen to get a hold of it.

I know that there are tapes of Marcel's fights against Antonio Gomez & Kuniaka Shibata. I would guess there might be a copy of his fight with Spider Nemoto floating about from a japanese collector but can't confirm.

Hope this helps.

Great fighter that retired too early. He probably retired because he did not see enough earnings in the boxing ring. He really started as a basketball player, and was supposed to make the Panamanian National team, but his coach cut him because according to the coach he was too small in height for basketball.

So after that, to represent Panama in some kind of sport, he took boxing. He did pretty good for a basketball player. He is the ONLY Panamanian boxer to retire undefeated champion.

I know Panamanian TV has a great collection of his best fights. Especially a man named Juan Carlos Tapia, who I think got more fights on film than anybody in the world, including more fights than Bill Cayton and Jim Jacobs put together.

This is his website: lomejordelboxeo.com

Probably he can provide you any fight that you want. He also has a lots of fights from all over the world, especially Japanese boxing, old and new.

Thank you for the post-the Shibata bout interests me due to it being a draw, & also in the fact of the scoring:

72-69, 71-71, & 65-71.

I am assuming there was some hometown bias there, as it took place in Japan. But would like to see it, to confim my suspicions.

It's unfortunate I can't find much more information on him, except for him losing to a younger Duran, & beating a younger Alexis. But he looked like a great fighter, incorporating offense with slickness.

If you are interested in the Arguello bout, let me know.
