Johnson/Dempsey
How do you think a prime fight beteween these two would have ended up?
Initially i thought Johnson would annihilate Dempsey.
Due to watching Johnson v Battling Jim Johnson last night though, it seemed he was struggling with his aggressive style.
I still think Johnson would win this but now I think it would be a lot closer than I previuosly thought.
Of course it could just have been an off night for Jack!

2 great inside fighters who could put great power into very short punches.
Might also be a match up of the greatest offensive HW versus the greatest defensive HW.
In a short fight of 4-8 rounds I think Dempsey's early aggression and punch output would see him take a decision. The longer the fight was scheduled for the more it swings in Johnson's favour.
The thing is Johnson liked to tie up opponents, frustrate them, wrestle them and wear them out. But at such close quarters Dempsey was too good not to get some shots home.
Overall I have to pick Johnson. But this would be a close run thing with the momentum swinging back and forth between the 2 fighters.
These 2 are possibly my favourite Hws.

You know Dempsey MAULS the pretender Johnson, giving him the beating he deserves. From the opening bell,Dempsey comes out bobbing & weaving, cutting off the ring ripping machine gun combinations to the body, back to the head.He stays so close on Johnson, they look like siamese twins.Johnson tries to clinch futilely,as Dempsey manhandles Johnson, before chopping him down in the 10th round.Dempsey wins a one sided fight, which would have ended sooner had it not been for Johnson's size advantage, and constant clinching.Roars Like Me wrote:How do you think a prime fight beteween these two would have ended up?

Does that mean Ezzard is your real name, or is he a favourite at Light-Heavy?Ezzard wrote:These 2 are possibly my favourite Hws.
I think the balance would lie with which Johnson turned up, in the right frame of mind Johnson could simply take Dempsey apart piece by piece, very much like Ezzard said, wrestling him, toying and frustrating him whilst preparing to completely wear Dempsey down. If Johnson half-heartedly takes on Dempsey then Dempsey's aggression and power is thrown into the mix, with Dempsey possibley scoring a early-mid KO.
However, I think taking serious enough Johnson would score well enough to win by late stoppage or UD.
Ezzard Charles is my all-time favourite fighter. I think it's amazing he was HW champion but I always think of him as a LHW who was so good he beat all the HWs too...'Rocket'Rigby wrote:Does that mean Ezzard is your real name, or is he a favourite at Light-Heavy?Ezzard wrote:These 2 are possibly my favourite Hws.

I'm almost 100% certain film of Johnson v Johnson does not exist.Roars Like Me wrote:How do you think a prime fight beteween these two would have ended up?

The fight with Jim Johnson was towards the latter end of Jack Johnson's title reign and would bear no significance towards the outcome of both Jacks meeting in their prime.
My pick would be Johnson to win via clear points decision. He may have to get off the floor to do this, if Ketchel can knock Johnson down then Dempsey certainly could as well

I meant the youngest referee fight.....it looked as though Carpentier gave the nod to Johnson, even though it was more than tight.

This is pretty much how I see it as well. You would have to give Dempsey a chance. However, Johnson would win 2 out of 3.Ezzard wrote:2 great inside fighters who could put great power into very short punches.

Re: Johnson/Dempsey
The fight commentary that Big Fights Boxing Inc. put over the Moran fight is not very accurate. The commentator makes it out to seem like Johnson won by the skin of his teeth and did all he could to pull it out. But if you read various ring-side reports, everyone I've seen had Johnson comfortably ahead in a mostly dull fight (Moran had his moments but they were not close enough to winning the title)Roars Like Me wrote:Mmmm that's because it was Frank Morandempseyfire wrote:I'm almost 100% certain film of Johnson v Johnson does not exist.Roars Like Me wrote:How do you think a prime fight beteween these two would have ended up?

Ezzard's achievements are certainly nothing short of spectacular, he was certainly a great. I remember seeing a picture of him in an Uno (I think) in Orlando and I was telling everyone that's Ezzard Charles one the greatest, most skilled boxers ever to step into the ring.Ezzard wrote:Ezzard Charles is my all-time favourite fighter. Johnson could box/dance/slug it out with the best of them. Dempsey pretty much had one style, to keep coming forward and to cut off the ring. Johnson could easily switch styles on Jack. I think I would go with Johnson, only because Johnson is probably #2 behind Ali in the greatest HW 'movers' of all time and Jack had trouble with movers.
