Overrated

Post by pbc1999 »

Bernard Hopkins' name is now mentioned on lists of top 10 middleweights of all time-I think that is rating him too highly. Sure, he has the defense record, but I've seen many middleweights who were better than Hopkins. For instance, George Benton, Eduardo Lausse, Holley Mims are examples of former contenders who I believe would have beaten Hopkins. In another era, Hopkins never would be champion.

Hey keyser..right on withAaron Pryor. I was inCincinnati when he turned pro and saw most of his early fights.lot of tanks jobs. plus, i knew who he consistently refused to fight when his handlers wnated him to move into better opposition. also, his fights against Arguelo were against a man who really had his prime at a lower weight. I can go on and on anbout this one, and probably will in a future post.

As for all time hugely overrated..no question .Rocky Marciano.

I am surprised to hear that Pryor was involved in tank jobs. Do you mean that some of his opponents were dive artists or were the fights fixed so that Pryor could beat men who would beat him in honest contests?

Jaclem-
You've probably seem a lot more of Pryor than me, but did you ever see him in serious trouble in a fight. It always seemed to me that you could bounce bricks off his head and he wouldn't go down.

maybe tank jobs is too harsh, if it implies that the promoter was in on a fix. Let's just say that some of these early guys weren't even warm bodies; just luke warm and shouldn't have been licensed. There was one that I saw from ringside though that was so obvious the crowd laughed. Aaron missed a wild one by at least two feet and and the guy went down for the count. When he got up he ran to the dressing room with his towell over his head. There were others who went down from the kind of tap you apply to someone's shoulder if you want to get their attention.

As for his chin..true, but the same can be said of Tex Cobb. In fact, in these early fights I told his handlers that he coudn't keep sticking his chin out like that and taking those punches. I think the way his career ended proved me right. I admire him for the way he came back from his serious drug problem to rehabiliation, and he was in some good fights, but in no way was he anything near being a great fighter.

Well, I BELIEVE that this fighters were the MOST OVERRATED OF ALL TIME. Here is my list:
1. TERRY NORRIS--- Who did he fought and beat? just names!
2. TOMMY MORRISON---- He saw REALITY in the Michael Bentt fight.
3. GERRY COONEY--Another that SAW REALITY!!! Holmes destroyed him!
4. NASSEEM HAMED---It was just a matter of time for that clown to go.
5. MIKE TYSON--He was getting there of being the best heavy ever, but HE BLEW IT!!!
6. HECTOR CAMACHO Jr.---He better go to a circus career than boxing
7.OSCAR DE LA HOYA--- I BELIEVE HE IS WAY OVERRATED!!!
8. MARK BRELAND---The next OLYMPIC HERO?
9. SHANE MOSLEY--The NEXT SUGAR??? This guy do not even come close to Sugar Ray Seales!!! WHAT A WASTE!!!
10.VINNY PAZIENZIA--- ANOTHER CLOWN!!!
11. AARON PRYOR-- Although a great fighter that CAREER could have been GREATER, The RING magazine got him ranked TOO HIGH!!! #35?
12. ROY JONES, Jr.---GREAT TALENT, but fighting MEDIOCRE OPPONENTS WON'T GET HIM NO WHERE!!!
13. PERNELL WHITAKER---What Max Kellerman and The Ring were thinking? Kellerman puts Whitaker as the greatest lightweight of all time which was an ABERRATION. The Ring puts Whitaker as #10 in the greatest fighters of the last 80 years? C'mon? :-?

The most over rated fighter of all time is no other than the supposed greatest of all time ALI!
If anyone here can give me an argument to the contrary then I have settled this post.
