Five fights were contested in the open division, in four rounds instead of three, with the winners advancing to the national championships in Tennessee.
Greg Coverson of Infinity won a UD over Luigi Gjokaj of Motown at 132-lbs. Gjokaj showed much improvement over his first appearance in the ring, last year at this tournament, and a substantial weight loss down to 132-lbs but Coverson’s quadruple experience prevailed.
In the final match-up involving fellow club members, Kronk Gym’s LeAndre White fought against Ed Williams at 141-lbs. For White, this was the second time in this tournament that he had to face a teammate having decisioned Ray Harris on Saturday. Today, Kronk pro Andy Lee was in Williams’ corner while Raymond Harris, Sr, wearing a gold shirt with “Raymond Harris” emblazoned on the back, worked White’s corner alongside Arthur “Bam” Longhorn. The fight ended with a UD for White and further discomfort with his right arm, which was injured prior to Saturday’s contest.
J’Leon Love of Kronk won a unanimous decision over Chingiz Suleymanov of Hamtramck at 165-lbs. A late punch after the third bell caught the chin of Love, and his attention, in a match that sometimes looked more like wrestling than boxing.
Crowell Recreation’s Brandon Preston won a UD over Dwayne Williams of Dynamic at 178-lbs. Preston was plagued by a wardrobe malfunction – his right shoulder strap kept slipping – that, in the end, didn’t matter as the decision, and the gold medal, was his.
Isaiah Thomas of Kronk won a controversial split decision over Craig Lewis of Casa De Boxeo at 201-lbs. Thomas was penalized for holding in one round and went down by accident and not by knockdown more than what one would expect of someone with his experience.
