Huge Wins After Long Layoff

Post by JCS »

In an attempt to test a potential new ratings modification, I need to pick the brains of the guys in here.

I'm looking for huge wins from fighters coming off long layoffs (18 months or more). Examples are Leonard/Hagler and Maske/V Hill.

Can anyone think of earlier bouts where this occurred? The earlier the better.

Not sure if this qualify as a super fight, but Muhammad Ali vs Jerry Quarry after 3 years and approximately 7 months absence from the ring.

That's a pretty good one.. but I think Ali may have still been heavily favored..

I'm trying to find something thats more of the upset variety.

I found this.

Ali Vs Quarry-Oct 26th, 1970 Atlanta
Muhammad Ali had not been able to fight for more than 3 years because of his legal troubles. Before he was on his hiatus he was dominating each fighter he faced. He was so much faster and smarter in the ring then his opponents that it looked like child's play. Ali was 29-0 when he came back to the ring to fight Jerry Quarry. Quarry was no easy first fight, and in fact many predicted he would beat Ali. Quarry was a tough fighter who was out pointed in a tough decision to Jimmy Ellis for the World Title 2 years earlier. Quarry had a good left hook and great chin and was willing to fight anyone. Quarry was 37-4-4 going into this contest. Everyone was anxious to see if Ali still had the speed and incredible skills that he had before his semi retirement.

Yes borinken, and many Quarry fans believed Quarry would have gotten to Ali if the fight hadn't been stopped on the cut... wishful thinking, and that was disproven in the rematch where Ali abused Quarry. But that said, I believe Ali was still the favorite in the first fight.

Tszyu-Mitchell II comes to mind... though again, I believe Tszyu was the favorite. Same deal with Foreman-Lyle.

It's a difficult question as most fighters tend to take tune ups after long layoffs.

Here we go again, Decagon making things up as he goes along. The sad search for attention continues...

Vicente Saldivar returning to the ring after 21 months of retirement to take on and beat the #1 contender for the featherweight title in Jose Legra and win.

Schmeling vs. Vollmer (1947)
Max K.o.'s his eight year younger Opponent 8 years after his last fight in the 7th round. ...8 years in wich he suffered from war injuries and had lost all his money. An attendence of 40.000 (many american soldiers among the spectators) watched the fight at Waldstadion in Frankfurt cheering Max for his win and his 43th birthday. Not a magnificent fight but magnificent circumstances....and Maxies great right hand still got the job done.
