Derry Matthews to fight on July Bill

Post by Max Molyneux »

WBU featherweight champion Derry Matthews will fight in July, promoter allegedly confirmed today.

Matthews was last in action in February when he defeated John Simpson in the first defence of his title.

And Warren said today that his reward may be a shot against Nicky Cook in the next 12 months or so.

Cook challenges Steven Luevano for the WBO featherweight title at the O2 Arena on July 14.

Undefeated Matthews added that he would relish a fight against the winner - and believes he is the dark horse of the strong group of domestic boxers in the Sports Network stable who campaign between featherweight and lightweight.

"I've always just got on with things," said 23-year-old Liverpudlian Matthews. "My fight against Steve Foster Jr (in which he won the WBU title) was one a lot of people expected me to lose, but I gave him a boxing lesson.

"I'll let people think what they think, but come fight night I'm always ready."

Promoter Warren added: "People forget that Derry won a gold medal at the Junior Olympics. He is a talented fighter and he's got a big future in front of him."

I hope he fights someone like Morris or Asiku.

Vicious speaks highly of Asiku so I'd like to see what Jackson's like.

Jackson would slaughter Derry.

Unfortunately, Asiku is having problems getting a permit to base himself over here. He has been back in Australia for a number of months. Jackson was due to fight in Rugby in April but for the visa problems.

Matthews proved against Simpson that he is a fringe British level operator at the moment who with improvements could go a bit higher. The fact he holds a belt that is supposed to represent a world title is a huge joke in itself.

And yet hes a "world champion" and keeps telling us hes "great".

His style is awful, if he were to move beyond low British level & im sure some capable operator would turn him to mush.

I was impressed watching his defeat of Steve Foster Jnr, he does look big at the weight, but then Foster has only operated at fringe domestic level getting work on Hatton undercards

I think it will be that great boxer 'TBA' in the opposite corner, of course we will get a long list of good boxers named as possible foes, but then in a stunning move we will end up with a boxer from east europe who no-one's heard of.

He's only proven to be domestic level but Derry has shown potential to go further In my opinion.

Dirty Derry has to be the worst 'world champ' I can think of at the moment... it really is laughable that he can lay claim to such a title... he is also one of the dirtiest fighters I've seen in a long time and deserved to get disqualified 3 times over in his last fight... while I respect most fighters I find it hard to dredge up much admiration for the dirty one...

Then what do you think of Skelton In the 1st Williams fight?

What about Duran who's an all time great yet he got away with dirty fighting against Buchanan.

Hatton against Tszyu was called one of the best wins In a British ring by boxing monthly.

Who does get near Asiku though?

He'd do better than McKeever and Callaghan even If he lost though.

Or fortunately in Derry’s case.

Jackson would destroy him. Derry appeared to be a slow-starter against John Simpson (floored) and Jackson, as we all know, is a fast one.

Derrys tactics against Simpson made Duran look like a chrior boy... Duran was well winning against Buchanan before the disputed low blow (which is not as clear cut as many say) ...Derry would not have won against Simpson if not for his dirty tactics... his continual attempts to rub Simpsons cut in their fight was nothing short of disgusting... the most unsportsmanlike behaviour I've seen in the ring since Tyson vs Holifield 1...

Derry won 9 rounds to 3 In my opinion against Simpson but the score should of been 113 - 111 due to the dirty tatics and knockdown.

Just because Duran was winning doesn't justify the tactics.

Derry's use of the laces would have made Fritzie Zivic blush, although the fault lies more with Vann for not chucking him out.

The fact is that Duran hit Buchanan low as Ken leaned back on the ropes... it was a mistake imo, Duran was well in control of the fight why would he suddenly use foul tactics... Duran is often called 'dirty' but name some other instants when he hit a fighter low or used foul tactics, the truth is he didnt... he was rough, but being rough is different from being 'dirty' and using fouls to win...

Yes, and rather ironic that Vann is the man who is constantly warning fighters before fights 'no naughties with the head!'
...I wonder if Vann would have been so lenient if it had been Simpson committing the fouls??......
I thought Simpson had done more than enough to win the fight... the scoring was a joke.... like the refereeing...

If my memory is correct didnt Simpson floor Mathews? Simpson couldnt floor Callaghan. I wouldnt be so sure Mathews would do better than Mckeever or Callaghan. Just saw wbo ratings, cant believe that Asiku not even rated in top 15 and yet Mathews is No.10 :o . Asiku has boxed and pushed real close geniune world class fighters in Hussien and St Clair and beat good fighters. Just dont understand the politics of this sport sometimes
