Willie Taylor

Post by John »

Hi,
I wrote to you some time ago with a question about Willie Taylor
of Falls Church, Va., and the record of one Willie Ray Taylor of
Charlotte, N.C.. You told me then they were 2 different people, but
several items might be mixed up.
Now, you have updated and improved your records, but my question
looms even larger. I am convinced they are one and the same boxer.
Willie Taylor and I sparred hundreds of rounds together in
1987,88,89, and 90, at Jim Ed Jones gym in Falls Church, Va.. When we
first met in '86, he told me he had fought Frankie Randall twice, had
been thrown in with many accomplished pro's he lost to earlier in his
career, and had started his career with a fight in France. Irish Mike
Baker worked out at our gym in Falls Church, and they had fought each
other years earlier. Willie mentioned he had been thrown in over his
head previously, with guys like Scypion and Frazie.
The point is, it looks like the Willie Taylor who was from North
Carolina and still coaches boxing in the D.C. suburbs in Virginia is
really BOTH the 7-14 Willie Rae Taylor of Charlotte, N.C. AND became
Willie Taylor of Falls Church, Va. later.
I'm very curious about learning the 'real' truth of these two
listed fighters, who I believe are really ONE.

Here's the weight progression of Willie Taylor from Fall's Church, VA

1983-86 Lightweight
1987-90 Jr. Welter
1990-91 Welter
1991-94 Jr. Middleweight
1994 Middleweight
1997 Super Middleweight

Clearly from this perspective this Taylor did not fight Scypion, Baker, Mays, or any other Jr. Middleweight or Middleweight. I feel that he did fight Randall though, and I will move that to Fall's Church Willie.

Also Charlotte Taylor is listed in the 1983 Ring Record Book with a birthday of 8-5-1951. For the 2-9-1981 debut of Charlotte Taylor to be that of Fall's Church Willie, he would have been 17 years old. Unlikely age for a debut fight.

Find out the birth date of the Taylor you know.
