It is a bit of a shame that now they have an agreement that Pacquiao v Marquez couldn't be made.
However Barrera has one last fight on his Goldenboy contract so i'm happy to see him get blasted into retirement in a last high profile Vegas fight.
There can only be one winner though can't there? Pacman is running out of opponents and he really shouldn't be pushed up to Lightweight. So i don't mind his progress in cleaning up the division being slowed a little. I think having big fights ahead of him probably is the only thing keeping his focus on boxing and once the obvious big paydays are used up he'll retire.

I hope Humberto Soto gets the winner because he's more than earned his shot at something big.
I suppose it works out good for GBP and Arum - he signed with both, and both get a piece of him (for the next fight) - but the result is a formality.
Pac is ferocious and too much for anything less than prime Barrera and Morales. Shame as I was hoping Soto would KO Pacquiao.

Strangely enough the only way I see Barrera winning is if he goes straight at Pacquiao and goes to war with him. I think Pacquiao can be hurt to the body as proven in an earlier fight or two, and I do feel it would take Pacquiao by surprise in much the same way it did Morales when Barrera fought him the first time. If Barrera stands off and tries to box, Pacquiao will steam through him. Barrera is gonna have to go to the well one last time.
If Barrera's got one last great performance in him... I wouldn't put money on it though. The way Soto was wobbled by Bobby Pac doesn't bode well for him against Manny. JMM might be past his best now, though I felt he should have got the nod the first time. Valero is still a relatively unknown quantity. For me, the one to beat Pac is Guzman. Great chin, fast hands. I don't know what happened with negotiations there. A few weeks ago, Guzman-Pac was, supposedly, almost a done deal.lvlarc wrote:At this point I would prefer to see Pac vs Guzman or Marquez for Barrera's sake to be honest but still a quality rematch, better late than never. But Barrera hasn't fought that way for a number years now. I doubt that it would work out for him at this late stage of his career to be honest.ArtOfWar wrote:Strangely enough the only way I see Barrera winning is if he goes straight at Pacquiao and goes to war with him.
I have been very impressed with what I have seen of Guzman, but my reservation about him is that he hasn't fought in elite company, and his power at SFW has not been proven. I would like to see him face off with a Barrera or Marquez just to see where he is at.
But this is probably nit picking a bit because any of the matchups between Pacquaio, Barrera, Marquez, Guzman and Valero are good events with big name players.

Yeah, not convinced that Guzman belongs at the weight yet, sure he beat Barrios, but Barrios is pretty crude and although a dangerman, not an elite fighter.
I wish Marquez had gotten his rematch a couple of years ago, when he was still near his peak, he's on the wane now, but still very good, wheras Pacman is really at the peak of his powers.
I don't think Barrera has the legs any more to live with Pacman, he tried last time to meet fire with fire, and got blasted to pieces. He hasn't really looked spectacular since then, except for fighting old foe Morales, who is slow enough to allow Barrera to shine.

Could Barrera pull off the clinic that Marquez did though? Has Pacquiao improved so much since then that those tactics wouldn't work again.
I haven't watched the fight recently but after a round to clear his head JMM really seemed to shut Pacman down.
I feel Pacquiao is just a buzzsaw who you simply can't keep out of the way of whilst scoring, but it has been done once.

Marquez is a lot more mobile than Barrera, he has great movement around the ring, whereas Barrera takes little half steps in and out of range, he doesn't really use the ring so much.
Marquez combined movement with stiff punching to keep Pacman at bay, but I think Pacman is a much smarter fighter now, with a more well rounded toolkit. He just chased Marquez around the ring all night, and barely tagged him after the 2nd round.

It doesn't mean that much. You could say the way Pac was being outboxed at times by Jorge Solis bodes ill for him against the technically superior, KO punching Soto.chesh wrote:If Barrera's got one last great performance in him... God kows why ppl want Guzman. The man is a stinker with a half hearted attitude who'd easily be outworked. (he can only fight 1-min a round).
I don't think Pac is so much smarter. He just added a right hook and body punching to his arsenal...I don't think we know the true Pac yet. He can KO past their prime Barrera and Morales. Natural super feathers who can box and bang will be altogether different.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Marquez is a lot more mobile than Barrera, he has great movement around the ring, whereas Barrera takes little half steps in and out of range, he doesn't really use the ring so much.

Pac can definitely be outboxed. And he did face the worst Barerra I've ever seen. So maybe Barrera can do something different. Bit of a disappointing match though, really. If Pac KOs him, will be see a bloody rubber match?

I'll be supporting Barrera but hes really got the odds stacked against him. Pac is younger, brutal power, much higher workrate, faster, 10lbs heavier come fight night, stronger not to mention a fast 1-2 has always given Barrera problems and the fact Barrera will have demons a plenty. Barrera has got the skill factor that could possibly edge it out against all odds.
I hope so. Barrera can slow fights down and steal rds, but you'd think Pac is the worst man to try that against. however, I believe Pacquiao is a badly distracted fighter. The man is chaos outside the ring and someone can take advantage of it.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:I'll be supporting Barrera but hes really got the odds stacked against him. Although Barrera is physically not the same hes technically great. Many won't agree with me but I had him edging Marquez.Autobarn wrote:I hope so. The best way to beat Pac is to jump on his errors, back him up with combinations - and his defense is poor so he can be punnished for his errors and Morales and Marquez both punnished his errors. Blocking his straight left on the left glove and throwing left hook counters is another important part of the game. leteral movement is very important against Pac but Barrera doesn't have the legs for that now. The most improtant part of fighting Pacman is to punnish him for attacking you can't let him get a rythm and attack unpunnished, that doesn't mean stand toe to toe, but when he comes in, punnish his attacks and get back out of range again. Morales fought an educated first fought and then got too macho in the rematch. If he kept the fight strategy to the 1 outlined above then he may have pulled off a double victory. These thigs are easier said than done of course
Can Barrera pull it off? Probably not, I think if the Barrera that beat Hamed showed up he'd win but not this aged fighter we see today
there is a slight possibuility that he can read Pac's two weapons - straight left and right hook. Pac likes to lead with a straight left, jumping in reckless. if you unload on Pac, he enjoys a sneaky counter right hook. So essentially if Barrera can read those shots AND if his body is fast enough to do what his mind wants, it's not impossible.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Although Barrera is physically not the same hes technically great. I think once you have Pac 'disarmed' in a technical sense he isn't the same fighter. Interestingly, once Barrera has your measure he can unload with a pretty dramatic arsenal (ala Peden)...
After Mayweather, Barrera could be the best technical fighter in the game. MAB is normally best with his back against the wall. We can hope, anyway.
I probably would have given Marco a bigger chance (maybe even make him a slight favourite) had it taken place say 6 months after the first fight.
Marco IMO clearly wasn't up for it and had some problems which affected his training. Plus, I think the victory got to Manny's head a bit and he looked pretty overated vs Morales in fight 1. However, I think the Morales fight is what got Manny's focus back.... and whilst I think Marco will be better this night... its now 4 years down the road and Marco has had 3-4 tough ones since and looks like he is slowing down.
Should be a good un though and I won't write off Marco entirely.
Fightnews report is quite interesting, seems like Freddie Roach is a little pissed off with Manny perhaps being more focused on other things than boxing.
