Nigel Benn circa 1990.

Post by stujones »

Just been watching some old coverage of Nigel Benn being interviewed after he beat Iran Barkley. I remembered that the BBBoC wouldn't sanction the WBO (and that Barkley wouldn't pass a BBBoC medical) - what I failed to remember was Nigel tearing up his BBBoC licence and really being quite adamant that he wouldn't fight in the UK again.

Just wandering, how was this dispute settled and how did Nigel get his licence back, did he have to go through the medical procedures again? Why did the BBBoC allow Nigel to comeback as he was being, as publically as it would ever get, damn to them.

They Board didn't have the bottle. They knew that without Nigel Benn, British Boxing could possibly die.

I remember the Benn-Barkley fight well. I recall Nige being a bit of an underdog in the fight and tearing into Barkley from the opening bell and winning by the 3 knockdown rule. What a performance, to stop "The Blade" in one round. In reterospect, this is almost up there with Nigel's win over McClellan.
Benn is an absolute legend :TU:

Wasn't this an Ambrose Mendy inspired publicity stunt? I'm sure i heard the story that he was just ripping up a piece of paper & never had any intention of staying away.

How about Kevin Barry reading from a piece of paper about the strategy they had devised which would enable David Tua to beat Lennox Lewis, then Lewis taking the piece of paper, looking at it, tearing it in half and declaring simply: "Fiction."

It always annoys me the way some USA fights fans slag off Nigel Benn with regards to his wins over Barkley and McClellan. Calling him a dirty fighter, bully etc.

Benn was never a dirty fighter, he was agressive and rough sure and often bent the rules but what top fighter doesn't? Also how the hell was Benn suppose to beat these two tough nuts? Get on his toes and turn into Willie Pep, no he did what he did best and beat them at their own game.

I think a lot of USA fight fans (not all of them) just don't like the fact that a UK fighter beat a Bad Boy from The Bronx at his own game and years later went on to beat the 'unbeatable monster' McClellan.

I also hate it when some USA fans try and blame Benn for The G-Mans injuries. This is Boxing!!! Bad things happen, all fighters no the risks.

Benn may not have been the greatest UK fighter of all time, but he was without a doubt one of the most exciting and entertaining.

I still miss those Benn fights nights and I am just so glad I was ringside for a few.

Even my mother liked to watch Benn fight and she had not followed a fighter since Muhammad Ali.

Barkley had just lost to Duran, but it was an excellent win. I have often thought about what had happend had it not been for the 3 knock down rule.

I've heard that Barkley was not very happy about the stoppage and was keen to carry on in the car park....

It was a tad harsh IMO, not Calzaghe vs Manfredo harsh but given the time left I think Barkley could have continued. Even the excellent referee Carlos Padiella seemed a bit guilty with body language saying "sorry, got know choice rules are rules".

I was ringside for quite a few Benn fights including GM

He is one of the few Brit fighters most American fight fans respect and for sheer entertainment value, we wont see anyone quite like him again, who could bring himself back from the brink to pull out a victory

The IB was, despite the result, not all one way and Benn took some decent shots. I think Americans did not like the fact he threw some afters when IB went down.

Mind you, they never like it when their fighters get some of their own back. Hence the Ricky "hugger" Hatton comments and all those claims that Honeygan cheated against Curry. How? by not rolling over?

They went apoplectic when Honeygan ran across the ring in one of his fights and knocked someone down just as he was getting off his stool ( gene hatcher?)

" the bell went ding so I went dong"

Legends the pair of them

it was 'johnny bumphus' who lloyd clocked just off his stool !!

hatcher was a different kettle of fish, lloyd rendered the 'mad dog' unconscious as he was leaning against the ropes.

in his day the 'ragamuffin man' was one hell of a scrapper !!

The Robbie Sims fight is one that overlooked a bit in the career of Nigel Benn, he was the only person to ever stop Sims, and it was a tough fight to take after the Eubank loss

Nothing wrong with that Bumphus fight, he was up, the bell had rang and Lloyd clocked him and got docked a point....

duva was huffing and puffing but it was fair enough.....

He finished him within a minute of that anyway...
