Charley Mitchell

Does anyone know anything about Charley Mitchell? It seems he was a brit who usually faced opponents bigger than him, and fougt to a draw with John L Sullivan when Sullivan outweighed him by 40 lb.

Charley Mitchell first fought Sullivan in 1883 and the fight was stopped in the third round. Not sure of why...maybe police. Sullivan was knocked down in the first round. They fought a 39 round draw in 1888. One record shows Mitchell weighing 200 pounds but that has to be wrong as he was what would now be a middleweight, unless all other reports are wrong. He was knocked out by Jim Corbett in three rounds in 1894, but the cry of fix was loud and strong, as Corbett wasn't considered a puncher and Mitchell's stand against Sullivan and others made this seem suspect.. If you can't find a bio of Sullivan in a used book store or library, you might check out a new biography of Jim Corbett. About two years old, I think.I haven't read it but surely the Mitchell fight will be in it.
