Bring Back Bare-Knuckle Boxing!

Post by Homicide Henry »

For boxing fans there is Friday Night Fights and HBO After Dark. Nothing wrong with the standard Marquis of Queensbury Rules but I, myself, is a hardcore brawl for all pugilism fan.

The days of Sullivan, Mitchell, Ryan, Gaunt, Figg, Freeman and the like were the best! :D

Plenty of action as the rules were not as strict as they are now. They should bring back the bare-knuckle boxing and have its own federation. And the London Prize Ring Rules should be brought back too.

:D Boxing is okay...but a fight is what gathers real attention and gets all the hype.

Why stop there? Let's bring back Roman boxing! You know, the guys that fought with steel gloves with spikes all over them.

btw- Has anyone noticed that this guy has yet to respond to one of his own posts? Remind you of anyone?

This is a stupid post and frankly I clicked it on by mistake. But, as long as I'm here, anyone who'd take the time to dig out contemporary newspaper reports of the bare knuckle era or read a few books would soon discover those brawls were NOT action filled with fast fists flying. They were primarily endurance contests because they were without round limits and the fighters had to conserve their energy. they were mostly tug and pull and wrestle along with fewer clean punches as the fights went on. the padded glove does not protect the fighters head as much as the fighters' hands so the glove era brought in more sharp punching. John L Sullivan is certainly an old fashioned fighter by today's standards, but he DID bring some skill and hand speed along with his punch and was a forerunner of the more modern era brought in by Corbett. Incidentally Sullivan went on record many times as preferring the Marquis of Queensbury rules as superior to the older London Prize ring and prehistoric ones. He said the Queensbury brought more skill to what he often referred to as "the art"
