Has Enzo suprised anyone else?

Post by thepocketrocket »

Whe Enzo was on his way up I will admit, I thought he was pretty crap, getting knocled out by Lee Swaby just went and 'proved my point'
Then he had his life and death struggle with Bruce Scott//he got KD in bout 2 seconds and was given 30 seconds to recover(nearly) Yes he won but I always thought he would get knocked out by the first good fighter he faced..

However he has gone on to beat some good names and is now odds on to beat Wayne Braithwaite..I wouldnt have picked that 3 years ago...

Whatever happens he has proven me wrong....

I think, as far as upright punchers go, he's come along as well as Pavlik and Cintron. He has a good repertoire and anyone who overlooks Hobson (twice) and Dominguez as learning fights are foolish.

I liked the look of Enzo vs Gunn. I know Gunn was atrocious. But I liked Macca's balance, calm, and punch repertoire.

His way to the title was a bit 'underhand' i.e. beating Henichen to be mandatory but then again he did gun for Nelson - it was Johnny who pulled out twice and though he was injured, Johnny never wanted the fight in the first place.

the differance between then and now for me is enzo is so much more calm he used to go looking for the big ko but has realised that he will land a solid punch within 36 mins and he's learned to relax and let the punches flow his defence has improved he blockes with his arms a bit more but for me when he's unloading his chin tends to go up a little to much he needs to put a sponge under his chin and hold it there when he is shaddow boxing that will help keep the chin down and i think his footwork is ok aswell for me a all round good fighter

I have never been convinced, always thought he is very shakey when he gets hit. Hobson isn't a massive puncher and had him badly shaken a few times in the first fight.

For me I'm impressed about his fight on Saturday and its a great test - he will be hit no question so will be interested to see how he takes it and comes back.

Think if he wins on Saturday then he's announced his arrival on the world stage.

Is he going to move up to heavyweight? Enzo Calzaghe was hinting after the Gunn fight that Enzo hits harder than most heavy's etc so I took that as an indication that that could be the future plan.

Hobson was a good fighter. A very big bloke. Gave Rothmann a hell of a fight by all accounts.

Macca really has suprised me.

After Swaby, you would have never thought he could have handled Scottt, and even after that I thought he had def found his level.

However Macca was still a young man then, and while he has boxed all his, he never had the opportunity to box at a high level in the amateurs, so he was on a steep learning curve.

It is a testiment to the Welshman how much he has improved, he is a gym rat, who is hungary for success, he has worked hard and is still improving today.

I really hope he has improved enough to take this next step up in class.

And for the record he hits harder than most heavyweights in the world.

yeah everything is on the line on saturday for enzo.

he's been virtually handed a title shot with warren playing the ratings game to get him the wbo title.

this is where he has to earn it.

braithwaite wins i think.

In an ideal world, every fighter would be a hard hitter with a dodgy chin. Makes for more exciting fights. :box:

Well us in Wales got to see the Swaby fight live. Colin Jones went from practically drooling about him... too just shutting up and then very very critical.

Never thought he would be fighting and beating a British champion, let alone starting the betting favourite vs a recent world champion.

So surprised me big style... After Booth though, I have been generally impressed - but not fought anyone I wouldn't have tipped him against.

Yes I can. I said that I liked the look of Macca in the fight. His technique looked good. I admitted the opponent was useless, but that Macca has a sharp look about him. He's a work in progress so I feel the point is valid.

Of course, like you say, the gut checks with Hobson and Dominguez were great learning experiences. He ws in trouble v Dominguez and he found the punch.

braithwaite wins i think
or maybe Warren is getting him opportunities and fights at the right time, maybe sugesting that Enzo - peaking, big for the weight - has got Braithwaite's - past his best, much smaller - number.

nonetheless, Nelson did pull out twice though of course that means Enzo's not proven yet.

When Braithwaite lands one on him, it will be all over.

this Macca-Braithwaite thread is a reductive in its mentality (in places) as the Pavlik-Miranda one. You know, Pavlik hasn't fought anyone so he can't beat a man who has beaten good opposition...

You have to consider the fights where Enzo did learn, where he did pass gut checks (Hobson, Dominguez) and how it has prepared him for step ups like this.

Half the ppl criticising Macca's chin and hailing Braith's power may be doing a U-turn and focusing on the negative of Braithwaite if Macca batters him.

All I'll say is, "Don't get smart with me - AFTERWARD!" (if it comes to it) LOL

Yup proved me wrong I have to say, I didn't think he would mix in this class after I saw his desperate struggle with Bruce Scott.

Macca was 6 pounds under limit. This is going to be a hard fight for him.

Wasn't there some weigh in controvesy ahead of the Braithwaite vs Mormeck fight? Didn't Wayne come in gaunt and at the old Cruiser limit?

Wasn't so much controversy. It was just that ppl were surprised that he came close to/under the old limit, whereas Mormeck was massive and hulking.

Why he hell did Macca come in 6 lbs under the limit?

I would like to think it's because he's been training harder than ever before. He's always looked a little fleshy, so the weight could just be a result of really pushing himself. Hopefully he hasn't overdone it.

Big Enzo is one of the most improved fighters I have seen - Enzo Calzaghe has done wonders with him - He can win this fight if he manages to avoid Braithwaites bombs but if he gets caught it could be all over for him - As good as Enzo is he tends to be a bit open at times and Braithwaite will capitalize if he sees his chance - This is a very risky fight against a very heavy hitter and should tell us a lot more about how far Enzo can go - Enzo still has to prove he is worthy of the belt he holds -Love to see him against the up and comming Marco Huck if he gets through this one OK.

Yeah I remember all the local hype over Enzo, prior to the Swaby fight - he was being touted at the great Welsh heavyweight hope by the S Wales press. After that shocker, I thought that was about it for Enzo - so yes, big surprise he's made it to the big time - tonight he has anyway.

My guess is he'll likely box smart tonight, keep Wayne at the end of his jab for the early part, and drop over the big shots to end it.

He'll have to be very careful though, bit like defusing a time bomb, one mistake and it'll be goodnight Macca.
