Apologes for the slightly misleading title, but I'm actually referring to Mr Calzaghe. Aside from the job he's done with his son, he's taken Gavin Rees to a world title tonight, done a great job with Bradley Pryce, and has transformed his namesake.
The Enzo Mac in the ring tonight bore little resemblence to the one I saw in Cardiff against Gary Delaney - shot selection was so much better. He showed a great jab, some lovely uppercuts and a beautiful left hook to the body, and mixed up some great combos.
My only concern remains how upright he is and the way he hangs his chin in the air as he backpedals in a straight line. If this can be addressed he can mix it up with the best of the divison.
As for Mr Calzaghe, if he was based in London he'd be hailed as a great. He consistently produces the goods and it's about time we recognised him as possibly the best British trainer in the game today.
ENZO - MOST UNDER-RATED?
I agree Deserter... now I aint been the biggest fan of Enzo Calzaghe and I still think he is more blessed with a good bunch as opposed to him "transforming" his fighters. However, undoubtedly the best trainer in the UK. All his fighters are EXTREMELY fit, will be up for it and no how to throw a decent punch (something IMO Dai Gardiner's fighters generally lacked).
I do think he has been very lucky also... In his son he has had one of the most naturally gifted fighters this country (the UK) has produced... in Enzo Mac he has one of the most naturally gifted punchers this country has produced. Rees faced a subdued and dissapointing Mbaye and really Ossie Duran put in a similar effort as Mbaye vs Pryce.
I am a firm believer that it is the fighter that makes the coach, but I'll give Enzo his dues he is getting the sport buzzing in Wales and is undoubtedly the best coach in the country. His fighters are the fittest and generally the most composed.
I would love to see him work closely in future alongside Ronnie Rush. Ronnie is a great defensive coach - something still lacking a touch from Enzo's coaching style. In Steve Robinson and Barry Jones, Ronnie Rush had two of the finest defensive fighters Britain has produced in many years.... He also had them from scratch.
I do think compared to the likes of Cunnigham, Goosen, Roach and McGirt - Enzo and the rest of the British boys are a bit off the pace. However, he is undoubtedly the finest British coach currently.
