Comebacks: Geezers Gone Wild

Outside of George Forema's comeback (1987-1997) one of my favorite comebacking old-timer was "The Bionic Hand" Gerrie Coetzee. In the mid 1990's Coetzee, inspired by Foreman, decided to make a splash on the HW division. Unfortunately he was well over-weight and well...old. It also didn't help him any that he hadn't fought in almost a decade, and despite facing a not-so-in-his-prime Iran Barkley (who was now a HW) he lost.

But make no mistake, Coetzee put up a helluva fight for a few rounds and had a flash or two of his former glories, even hurting Barkley at times. It was a pretty fun fight to watch despite it being two has-beens.

Name one of your favorite old-timers who made a comeback and name which fight was our favorite 8)

Jerry Evans, former contender of the 175 pound title in the 1970's, decided to make a come back while in prison after he saw George Foreman become the HW champion of the world at the age of 45. Evans was now in his 50's, but trained everyday in the prison yard until his release. His 'comeback' was a one fight deal in his home town of Muncie, Indiana against a former world kick boxing champion named Tom Hullings.

The fight was eight rounds, and despite the 20+ age difference, Evans managed to pull of a draw. The fight, evidentially, was such a embarassment to Hullings that he never again fought under the Marquis of Queensbury, as he went the limit with a man who was old enough to have been his father.

Jean-Pierre Coopman made a comback after 18 years against an opponent who had not fought for 21 years!!!!

The situation does ring some bells Deca, but then again, I honestly can't remember who the hell it could have been.

Another of my favorite comebacks was Roberto Duran. Even in his late 40's he refused to retire, and arguably his last great fight was against "The Pazmanian Devil" Vinny Pazienza. That fight, was my personal favorite of Duran's comebacks. After Pazienza was declared the winner, the prideful "Hands of Stone" stuck out his tongue and waved his and like "Whatever", believing that he had defeated the much younger man.

Duran finally did retire after a car crash at the age of 50.

The car crash finished Durans Boxing career, he had every intention of fighting on untill then.
