Boxing on the BBC

Are they dipping their toe back in? I know they cover boxing on radio, but sounds like TV is interested again, even if only amateurs for now. Does anybody know any more?

This is simply stating what we have already. The Beeb shows the ams now and again already. Unless you're optimistic that the 'events' include pro stuff but I very much doubt this.

Fingers crossed Beijing produces another Audley or Amir and it inspires the BBC to get properly involved again.

It would be good for the BBC to follow the qualifying competitions for the Olympics, at least then if a couple of our boxers do get through , they will be recognisable to the viewers when there in Bejing.

No, they have an existing contract with the ABA of England so this is nothing new. They will not be showing Pro-Boxing, still got the hump over their Harrison debacle.

With cut rounds also, showing Beyer's best rounds and then say Lucas was robbed.

The BBC1 controller doesn't like professional boxing, fact. Thus, its return is very unlikely, anytime soon.

The BBC output on comedy has been very poor recently, the utter shite '2 pints of lager' and now the even worse 'Grown ups'. Also 'My Family' has been flogged to death.
'Hyperdrive' has got to be the biggest waste of talent in years, they have funny actors in Nick Frost, Kevin Eldon and Miranda Hart , turning out complete rubbish. This show could have been so much better.

On the upside we do get Tribe, Still Game, Coast , and a number of good Docu's.
The BBC just doesn't seem to get a good balance though, its either shite or good.

she is certainly useless on BB - her chat show was generally considered to be kak - the woman wont last another big bro series. i'd advise her to go back to trying to get members of the public she meets in the street to date each other which transmits at 3.30am on "ragged-arse TV".
but whats the bbc doing asking her to do question time in the first place?
dont they know she is a complete bozo?

Regardless of his pro career, his gold medal was one of the greatest nights and biggest accomplishments in British boxing and it was this which kick-started the return of boxing to terrestrial TV.

Like him or not, you can thank Audley for this, because before him, there had been precisely NOTHING on the terrestrial channels since Eubank and the entire Sports Network stable jumped to Sky in the mid-90s.

Sure, it didn't work out how everybody would have liked with Audley and the BBC, but without him as a launchpad, we arguably wouldn't have seen any of the ITV boxing of the last two years or any of what was a very respectable BBC archive. The fights they put on were often good, just they didn't handle the show very well.

The BBC got the wrong crowd in with their last attempt, but even then there is sometimes that old BBC air of quality in their work that the likes of ITV just can't compete with. Ron McIntosh I always liked, the rest should pretty much be ditched....John Inverdale, Gary Richardson etc.

Although it was a shambles really, the BBC still gave me hysterics watching Mark"I know feck all about boxing"Bright try and squirm his way through the Belfast World Amateur Championships. I can still remember studio guests Wayne McCulloch and Rob McCracken laughing AT him.

Although I agree with the vast majority of what Terry says, I need to inject a bit of balance here.

I was all for slating the UK output (and much is indeed, rubbish) but then I moved away and was subject to what Americans watch.

Ye Gods, I'm still mentally scarred from this. I used to watch BBC America and get tearfully nostalgic when viewing repeats of 'Are You Being Served' which was genius compared to most of the US output.

Yep, for its faults, British TV stands head and shoulders above anything I've seen elsewhere in the world - and I've been to a lot of countries. Significantly better than American, and don't even get me started on Australia TV
