Groundhog Day starring Danny Williams

Post by Big Pussy »

From FW.tv website
British heavyweight champion Danny Williams says he wants a rubber match against Matt Skelton.

Williams beat Skelton in February last year before losing a rematch in Cardiff in July. Both fights went the distance.

Now he says he wants to prove once and for all he is the better man, having slimmed down since he weighed in at more than 20 stone for their initial rematch.

The Brixton Bomber was close to quitting the sport after being stopped in three rounds by Audley Harrison in December.

But he bounced back with a solid win over British champion Scott Gammer, to spark talk of a European title shot.

Yet it seems the man he wants is Skelton, who looked unimpressive against Michael Sprott last month as he ground a majority decision in a defence of his Commonwealth title.

Williams, 34, boasts a 37-6 (30) record, and is probably the most naturally talented of all the heavyweights in the UK.

He also says that, after beating Skelton, he wants another crack at a world title, having previously lost to Vitali Klitschko in a challenge for the WBC title.
Someone make it stop! :( :( :(

But in Groundhog Day, he has to relive the same day until he gets it right, at which point he can move on. So ONE DAY - perhaps after several hundred attempts - the winner of Williams v Skelton v Harrison v Sprott will get a world title shot!

I agree he's got the best chance of the four, and if he stays away from either Klitschko I wouldn't write off his chances.

And perhaps most importantly, whatever happens it won't boring to see him try. We can't say the same with any confidence about the rest of them.

Cant believe what Im hearing! Skelton, Sprott, Harrison, Williams are ALL appauling! Danny is leagues and leagues away from world class, slow and uneventful. All these British HW matches are excrutiating to watch, because they are so below par. I'm afraid it would be boring wtaching Danny try.

It's the pace the whole awful saga lumbers along at that is also so horrid.

I wouldn't have minded so much if they just said Williams-Skelton and Harrison-Sprott on the same night, winners meet 3 months later.

But this has dragged for what seems an eternity, one thrilling installment of the saga each calander year...

It's horrible.

Come on, for all his limitations, nobody can seriously contend Danny Williams is boring? OK, he's had his boring foghts (Audley 1, Skelton 2, Sprott 3), but on average he's an exciting competitor. For every Audley or Sprott snoozer, he's given us the Tyson, Potter, Long, Gammer, Serin, Mirovic. Even fights like Sprott 2, Meehan, Klitschko and Francis 1 were surprising one way or another. The point is, he's very unpredictable and this usually makes his fights pretty compelling.

The fact that Danny Williams is still talked about as one of the better British heavyweights speaks volumes about an appauling domestic division void of any real talent....... I only hope David Haye decides to make his mark and add some excitement back into the mix....

People went overboard after he beat Tyson, who then lost to McBride.... need I say more?

And people overlook the fact that he was drafted in to face Tyson because Tyson's people didn't give him a prayer... He was lined up as cannon fodder to make Tyson look good based on his previous showings e.g. against Sam...

The British HW merry-go-round got boring quite a while ago. Sprott stretching out Audley was fun for a while, but still didn't make me want to watch Skelton beat Sprott again (predicatble).
I think everyone, including the fighters themselves, has no wish to see any combination of Harrison, Skelton, Sprott and Williams any time soon.

Amazing how quickly people change their minds. Not necesarilly saying you, Taki, and I can't name names without unearthing the relevant threads, but before Skelton-Sprott 2 people on here were going on about how good it was to see our top heavyweights fighting each other regularly, albeit with their limitations. Now, because of one duff encounter, everybody's talking about how sick they are of it.

I actually agree we've pretty much done it to death, even if we haven't found a division leader, but with only a couple of exceptions they've all been decent scraps.

Its a shame Harrison was such a let down.. Love him or hate him he had the chance to clean things up domestically and it would've been good to see, but it seems his heart couldn't cash the cheques his mouth was writing.....

I realise that, but I was referring to the before and after of the most recent fight. Before Skelton-Sprott 2, people were excited about British heavyweights, and afterwards they were sick of it. This sway occurred after ONE particular fight.

The main reason it got boring was Warren promising the winner of X/Y a title shot. He did that for about 4 of those fights in a row! Skelton must be even more pissed off than I am. He's now about 2 years overdue for his title shot... and counting.
Seriously, the only interesting thing to happen in British HW boxing in recent months was Haye's quick visit.

I don't want to labour the point mate, coz to be honest, its neither that interesting nor important but its a slow day at work so.....

The current British H/W scene has been a series of new dawns, false promises, glimers of hope and downright disappointments for quite a while now.... You cannot tell me that the H/W scene conjoured up glamour, excitement and genuine interest right until the latest Skelton/Sprott installment.. I suppose the last time there was indeed a huge amount of interest was around the 1st Williams/Harrison bout and look how that, again, served to leave people thinking they'd been short changed.... Inconsistent, disappointing performances from all fighters in this domestic mix have turned people away from caring over a sustained period of time... Any interest and excitement in Skelton/Sprott 2 can surely be attributed to the "things can only get better" attitude that we like to maintain at times... I guess it's a bit like splitting with a mrs who you end up keep going back to... You try to kid yourself things will turn out better next time but the reality is you've known all along it isnt gonna work...

One duff encounter? Mate they are all so crap and there fights have always been boring. If you like him thats great, not knocking your right to be a fan. Its just I really find the likes of Williams, Skelton, Sprott and Harrison hard to watch. The best weights are the middles in my opinion. And the only way the HW division will improve is if a lighter, more fluent and aggresive fighter comes along who has the talent to do the business below 17 stone. Just my opinion.

Well its been predicted that they would meet for the third time so I suppose its no surprise - ITV wont like it so I hope FW is not going to stick it on an ITV undercard - Having said that I am sure if it happens it will be far better than Skelto/Sprott which turned out to be a disaster doing neither man any favours for future fights - Why cant they both move on and fight overseas fighters instead of settling domestic scores - Most of us have had enough of Skelton, Sprott, Williams and Harrison taking each other on - I correct myself, we didnt get to see Skelton/Harrison did we but I think we can do without it anyway - Just imagine if Harrison sparked Skelton it would be "the A force is back and I will be world champion within a year" - Please Frank keep this bunch apart we have had more than enough and so has ITV.

Is Williams even in shape? Going on past form he's probably ballooned in weight since beating Gammer.
