Just came across this interesting tidbit. The gate for the Jack Johnson- Frank Moran fight was about $40,000 USD, while the gate for the Georges Carpentier-Gunboat Smith fight was almost $75,000 USD. Roughly 8,000 showed for the first battle. Dick Burge, who promoted the second match, said that the theatre was meant to seat 11,000. They ended up packing in about 13,000 SRO with more massed on the sidewalk outside.
Both fights ended with people complaining.
