Some of the "fighters" that gave Joe Louis trouble

Post by muray »

Before they lost to Louis fighters (not boxers) such as Arturo Godoy, Tony Galento and Tami Mauriello were no "bum of the month" type but dangerous hitters and could have taken out Louis with one punch. Does anybody know of any other Louis opponents of this type?

Most of them could fight; Baer, Nova, Simon and Conn are the first to come to mind.

All good fighters wouter, but Conn, excellent though he was, doesn't qualify for the "take you out with a punch" selection Muray refers to.Glad to see you bring up Abe Simon. He was huge, had a telephone poll" left jab that really busted up Louis and he went into the 13th round. But, Joe Louis was Joe Louis and nobody was going to beat him in that kind of fight. Simon was an interesting man, and an honest one. Instead of making an excuse for losing, he said, years later, that he thought "Louis took me a little lightly and didn't come in in the best of shape." Louis stopped him in six in the rematch, after Simon was down several times, but when the referee stopped it, Simon complained vigorously. Highlights of this fight are around but hard to find. Another interesting Simon note. He said he was born without the ability to feel pain, so he never felt hurt in fights or the day after, when the pain usually starts. This is a rare but existent medical condition, and a bad one rather than good: children have trouble learning that fire is dangerous, for example. Baer was a terrific clouter, brother Buddy was no feather duster, and Lou Nova, virtually forgotten now, was a fine fighter. Some of these fighters got made fun of because Louis was so devastating, (and don't forget, a better BOXER than given credit for) that he made them look bad because he belted them out one after the other.

Tommy Farr by all acounts gave Joe a tough night, maybe Joe underestimated him. Many British fans thought Tommy had done enough to win mainly due to the radio commentry and the newsreels shown in British cinemas.Farr was first to admit that although he had given his best,he was beaten fair and square.A good acount of the fight can be found in Man of courage written by my pal Bob Lonkhurst.
