Further confirmation from fightnews.com:

A Venezualan newspaper is reporting that WBA super featherweight champion Edwin Valero suffered a cut on his forehead after a knife attack outside a disco in his hometown of Merida, Venezuala, situated high in the Venezuelan Andes. According to the Pico Bolivar, Valero (22-0, 22 KOs) was talking with some friends about 3AM Sunday morning in front of the "Racing Bar Discoteca" when they were assaulted by unknown assailants.

Sanchez was in training camp (for the Laporte rematch) when he died. He was renowned for his discipline in training and the time of his death came as a surprise to his camp. Some say he had snuck out to see a woman and was racing back before anyone would be aware of his absence.
