Heavyweight Tom Uren

Tom Uren, Global ID 164938, born Balmain, New South Wales Australia in 1921. His father, also named Tom Uren, was Australian Middleweight Champion.

Tom's boxing career was interrupted by his enlistment and Service in the Second Australian Imperial Force (army) during the Second World War. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese and was one of the Allied Servicemen forced to work on the Burma Railway. After the war he attempted to take up his boxing career, but his health was damaged by his imprisonment on starvation rations and he was not succesful. Tom then became involved in Politics as a Member of Parliament for the Australian Labor Party and was a Federal Minister in the governments led by Prime Ministers Gough Whitlam and Bob Hawke.
