derry, points. Also, I think Derry might be heading for Young Boxer Of The Year.Tkokidround1 wrote:should be an interestin 1 wat do u reckon the result will be and how
Well, he blooming shouldn't be. His fight with Stephen Foster shouldn't count towards this years award.
Its got to be John Fewkes, if not then there should be an enquiry. Although if Amir Khan was nominated then his Commonwealth title win would obviously make him the favourite - but I don't think he is nominated.

Khan has already won it. Don't think twice is allowed. Derry has beaten both John Simpson (Brit Champion) and Stephen Foster in the last year. What, or who has Fewkes beaten in comparison?stujones wrote:Well, he blooming shouldn't be. His fight with Stephen Foster shouldn't count towards this years award.

Ex EBU champion, still ranked highly in EBU rankings and recently disposed a Boxing News' top ten ranked fighter in a round.boxingchat wrote:Khan has already won it. Don't think twice is allowed. I didn't think the Foster fight counted, but if it does then yes there is a strong case for Matthews. Otherwise one fight in 2007 - not really enough alone to warrant such an award. I didn't agree with Murray winning the award when they did either... I think him and Mitchell should have swapped years. Just like to see a prospect more active, plus the Simpson fight was controvesial in the eyes of many... one in which he lost more fans than gained and lost some of the hype experts were saying on how far he would go.
Yeah, your right on Khan. I forgot that one, although didn't necessarily agree with it at the time.

Derry Mathews
I believe that the award is based on the achivements of boxers to include the full previous boxing season and not the callendar year. In this case, Derry has become English Champion , WBU Champion and defeated the reigning British Champion in a WBU defence. I think all the fighters nominated are excellent but the facts are these.
Derry has fought and beaten higher rated fighters than his fellow nominees.
Now rated No 9 by WBO and No 11 by IBF.
Box rec rankings No1 in Btitain and Europe and No 12 in world.
As I say, all the other nominees are excellent. I particularly like Fewkes and Cleverley, but I believe Mathews has progressed the furthest.
