Froch v Reid

Post by whiskey »

Uploaded the Jeff Lacy v Robin Reid fight HERE lads.

Perhaps the last big showing from Robin and we are all familiar with the run up to this fight (Reid being stuck in a hotel without a gym) and the prep could have been better.

But Reid was never hurt by Lacy's punches and wasn't particulary arsed about travelling to St Petersburg and it didnt faze him.

Some of the old man tactics were a bit unsavoury, but this time round against Froch i think we shall see a better version of Reid than in this example.

Afterall they say and punch and a chin are the last to leave a fighter and this may be the case for Froch.

I still expect Froch to halt him though.

I remember Reid clearly being hurt by a Lacy uppercut and had to look to the floor for a mercy count.

I get the punch being the last thing to leave a fighter but the chin certainly deserts some of them (roy jones for example)

In my opinion and its just an opinion - Reid didnt have a mark on him at the end and he didnt look the least bit beat up compared to some.

It was hardly like Reid left on a stretcher with an oxygen mask on? or needed to get stitched up ?

His head was clear considering he'd just lost to the new 'Mike Tyson'.

Reid diving on the floor were the old man tactics i referred to.

Robin is a tough lad and can hit a bit - i just the thought the whole Lacy fight was a bad penny for him from start to finish.

Reid took a pasting and was practically in tears at the end of his ordeal.

Robin's still got a decent chin though and can definately whack with real strength....if he can nail you.

Never my cup of tea, but he's a top rank British title challenger.

I once tipped that Belfast pudding Brian Magee to beat Reid in a fight described by Jack Magowan as "the worst main event in the history of the King's Hall".
Reid used his experience to break Magee's concentration early with constant complaining (he tried the same trick against Sven Ottke a fight earlier), then turned on the power in the middle rounds. Magee went down every time Reid clipped him

Magee is right cheat himself, but his workrate would ordinarily get him past Robin, but his ability to hold a good shot coupled with Reid's power only left one winner....even then though, it was only just.

That was a good win for Reid looking back, even though he won he looked bad that night too. As for the Lacy fight i agree Reid has always had a tough beak but he was more than stunned by Lacy, Lacy bashed him around the ring. Plus wasn't inept ref Jorge Alonso in charge of that one? I seem to recall he let Lacy whack Reid on the break and that was the start of Robin's downfall.

RR is a good name on the Froch record and thats what he will become after their fight - Reid was good some time back but the much fresher headhunter Froch will nail him when they meet - Reid is strong and can hit hard but he is also slow - Not a fight I am really wanting to see in particular because I am virtually certain of the outcome - Then its 2008 to see if Froch takes on a current world class fighter rather than a former one - I dont like his piss taking Naz stance or his personality and its time to see if his style works at true world class level - I dont think it will, but many on here think he could beat Joe Calzaghe if he had the chance - Cant see that one happening Froch is another Witter so he needs to look elsewhere.

beating reid at this stage means virtually nothing.

froch has already knocked out magee.

magee went virtually neck and neck with reid anyway.

so bored with froch's progress at the moment tbh.

I think this is the perfect fight to come back from knee ligament surgery from..

Cristian Sanvia the current European champ dont want to know - plus it's Robin Reid who's been calling froch out not vice versa...

A good stop-gap fight before he gets the mandatory shot at the WBC strap in March 2008.

Any idea what happening with Glenn Catley. He was involved in this British title situation, but I knew he pulled out of a deal to fight Robin in an eliminator.

Has Glenn retired? Will he be installed as the #1 contender. What about the Dodson vs Barney winner?

Not sure what people's problem with this one is, Froch comming off a 8 month lay off to take on a guy with power and experiance who may be on the wayne but is probably the 3rd best SM in the UK and in the top 10 in europe he is trying to find a fight against the European champion or a world champion so what is the problem.

Further more look at his British title reign:
Damon Hague (a good fighter who was probably just worth the fight for the vacant title)
Matthew Barney (naturaly at a higher weight should have won european title at the wieght above and very difficult to fight)
Brian Magee (former EBU title challanger, and former IBO challenger)
Tony Dodson (former British Champion who hadn't lost his title in the ring)
Robin Reid (former world champion who two years ago challenged for a world title and was also robbed vs Ottke and is comming off a good come back win)

given that we all complain about lack of quality british title defences no one can complain about that list, also I don't think anyone can argue that any of the forign fighters he has fought in the last 10 fights can be seen as weak.

Tony Dodson on this forum has said that froch looks deceptively open but is much harder to hit than he thought.

So what would everyone hear have him have done so far?

I agree with all that. The only problem I have with what you have said that if we were talking about a 25 year old fighting now, but Froch needs to get a bit of a moving on. I do wonder if his massive frame can make 12 stone easily also.

I have no complaints about Carl's career - just wished he thought about the turn over at a younger age.

Thats good to know, he looks like a beast in the ring. I think Calzaghe is franctionally taller but Froch appears to be so much bigger.

Good to know, cause I don't think he would be half as effective at Light Heavyweight - cause his strength is his strength.

His armes are enormouse, although he is 30 he thats no longer so old at boxing, also he has never been in any wars. Its a shame he didn't turn profesional earlier than 26 but you have to respect winning a good quality amatre medal first.

Good to see Carl Froch back in action after his injury. Good choice of opponent aswell. Should be a comfortable victory over a name fighter albeit faded.
