jess willard who at the age of 37 and and out of shape was the
champion and lost his title to jack depmsey in 3 rounds
brutaly battered willard

Actually, I think Da Preem was taller than Willard. Dempsey would have beaten Jess anyway, he did not have the tools to fend off a prime & determined Dempsey.

I don't think Carnera was the worst. He actually made a couple title defenses. I'm not real hot on Michael Spinks, Leon Spinks, Douglas or most of the champs of the 90's except for Lewis, Holy & Tyson. Bowe wasn't too bad however. Weaver & John Tate didn't do much for me either.

the Ring Record Book always listed Carnera as 6'53/4" and Willard as 6'61/4". Carnera was the heaviest, coming in one time at 265 pounds. It appears likely that both of these records are in jeopardy. i don't like to use the word "freaks" but the growth of both of them, more in Carnera's case were, as written previously, of a glandular disorder ,and unlike the larger fighrers of today. The big jaw jaw is a symptom of this physical aspect. Carnera's fights were mostly tank jobs, but you have to give him credit for courage.He got up against Baer something like ten times , after spraining his ankle in an early round knockldown, and he was on his feet when he told the referee he couldn't go on any longer.Baer was a terrific right hand puncher too. Louis didn't bowl over DaPreem with just one combination either. He was not a good fighter, and his ranking as the worst may have merit, but....against a smaller guy like Looney Leon he might have triumphed, as he was strong and could maul you in the clinches. As for Willard, he ranks at the bottom too, but of you get chance to see all three rounds of his beating by Dempsey, you will see courage seldom seen by any fighter. The times were so rough then that he had the tag "The Quiter" put on him, though people have been injured in car wrecks and suffeered less damage than he did in that fight.

..Leon Spinks was basically a journeyman...
..and not a very solid one at that..26-17-3..

I think Da Preem and Jess Willard would have knocked Leon out just like Jose Ribalta did.

jack dempsey said a right uppercut that Willard hit him with almost took his head off and was the hardest punch he was ever hit with...and this was in the second or third round when Willard was a wreck...so, right on Zurdo.

Yeah He gets obscured because he won the title from an all-time great and he lost to an all time great....but Jess Willard wasn't such such a bad fighter...He was big and tough and awkward and He was stong enough to go 26 rounds against Johnson in the blazing Havana tropical heat .His fight with Dempsey showed he had lots of heart...

I can't exactly say who the worst heavyweight champ is....but I know it's not Jess willard

I wonder why Carnera is considered to be a hormone problem, but not today's big guys. Of course, there was something weird with his jaw, and he was freakishly big for his era. But there are a lot of guys today this big,like Lewis and Klitshscko. Well, almost as big as Carnera. So is it better food now, better nutrition?

Jaclem's right, Carnera had a physical condition called acromegaly. In a normal person's body, the pituitary gland will stop or significanly lower output levels of HGH, the growth hormone, after adolecense. Patients suffering from acromegaly usually have something wrong in the pituitary gland that causes the body to keep producing HGH throughout life. Today's doctors believe that Carnera had a benign tumor on the gland that caused this.

People with high levels of HGH have several characteristics that distinguish them from naturally bigger humans - such as a large jaw and hands that resemble shovels.

Right. Agromegaly, with the lantern jaw. So in today's era, Carnera would be more like Shaq's size, compared to normal heavies like Lewis and Klitschko, who are almost as big as Carnera was. Of course, Shaq does not have agromegaly, his jaw and hands are normal. And a guy that big would just be destroyed by today's heavies.

maybe Carnera wasn't the best champ out there, but I ment and talk to him in Glendale, Ca. just before he went back to Italy to die and he seemed like a good guy and proud. He was not a freak like a lot of piople made him out to be. I like him. RICHBART

Have been busy with Christmas and fighitng an eye infection, so this "thank you" to BDS and marcellus is late, but I appreciate your following up and explaining the agromegaly that affeced Primo Carnera. As you pointed out, his was a mild example. I think Abe Simon, who fought Joe Louis twice is another example. though maybe borderline. To see extreme examples of this physical anomaly, sometimes in movies they have a giant, for example in a story about David and GoliathAlso, look at old circus pictures or sideshows and there is usually "world's tallest man" who has this genetic oddity.

eventually you posters who question my statements will catch on that if you are disagreeing with me on something other than opinion, you're almost always wrong,and someone with authority will make an entry to set you straight.

On that note, i wish you all a Happy New year and would miss this sight very much and all of you guys if it didn't exist.

Acromegaly doesn't automatically seem to affect your overall athletic ability, as more than a few NBA stars ( Scotty Pippen !!! ) appear to suffer from it as well. Then again a big jaw is hard to miss....
