Amir Khan on the attack

Amir Khan has struck the first blow in what could develop into a war of words with British lightweight champion Jon Thaxton.

Khan might be defending his Commonwealth lightweight title against Scott Lawton in Nottingham on Saturday night but it was Thaxton who was in his sights.

Khan and Thaxton appear destined to meet in a domestic dust-up next year. Khan is not eligible to fight for the British title until he turns 21 on Dec 8. Thaxton, who returns to the ring on Friday in a title defence against Dave Stewart, was branded a "five-round fighter…too old, too slow and too predictable" by Khan.

"I want to fight Thaxton after another two fights. He hasn't fought anybody as strong and quick as me, and if I did fight him I'd box his head off," added Khan.

Meanwhile, Lawton said he had been overwhelmed by the support he had received. "Judging by the ticket sales I'm going to have more fans than any of Amir's previous opponents," he said.
My view is that he will have to put up or shut up. "He hasn't fought anybody as strong and quick as me" in fairness Khan hasn't fought anyone as strong as thaxton.

Kahn should shut his mouth, Thaxton offered to fight him for free
in July and he still did not step up.
This rubbish about I'll knock his head off in two fight is a load of B.S.
He is just starting to embarrass himself now

Reminder to Kahn...Read below

Thaxton: Amir ‘Khan’ Get Me In The Ring For Free

- Thaxton makes public offer to Team Khan
- GoldenPalace.com to cover Thaxton purse
- Thaxton released by Hennessy Sports & Sky Sports for potential contest on October 6th

Jon Thaxton believes he has found a novel way to cut through boxing politics and secure a marquee showdown against Olympic Silver Medalist Amir Khan.

With the assistance of his promoter Hennessy Sports, the British Lightweight champion has secured backing from Internet Casino giant GoldenPalace.com that would allow him to fight his Commonwealth counterpart without the need for a purse from the event promoter.

The Norwich hero hopes the offer will tempt team Khan to accept an old school, double title showdown for their next fight, currently scheduled for October 6th at the Nottingham Arena.

“Amir’s promoter doesn't have to pay me a single penny,” said Thaxton. “GoldenPalace.com will put up my purse, with no strings attached.

'Mick Hennessy wants to make the big fights, so he is more than happy for me to appear on somebody else’s show as long as I am getting treated fairly.

“My broadcaster Sky Sports has been very supportive as well. They have shown their commitment to boxing once again by agreeing to me appearing on another broadcaster’s event if this fight happens. I am sure ITV want to show Khan in the best possible fights for their viewers.

“Both Khan and I have titles so there is no need for anyone to talk about options, so all round this is the perfect solution.

'Unless Khan doesn't want it, there is absolutely no reason this fight cannot happen. I’m ready for that date but I need to know if they are up for it now, I don’t want anyone springing an offer on me with two weeks to go.

“I have earned the right to call myself the best lightweight in Britain. If he wants to take it off me, he won't get a better chance.

“Now he is Commonwealth champion he needs to step up to the plate rather than going back to easier fights. He has been talking about being a world champion by the time he’s 21. Surely if he’s on schedule for that then he should be prepared to step in with the current British champion?

“I have been reading headlines that he is keen to fight me. Well here I am. Look no further, I’m here, ready to go.

“I believe he has shown a lot of disrespect to me and other fighters in Britain by saying we have to fight him before its too late. How can he say that when challenges are put in front of him, and then he doesn’t take them up? It’s beyond belief.

“I’m just saying it how it is. We all saw Willie Limond show that he can be vulnerable.

“Limond was not known as a puncher but was well in the fight and knocked Amir down in the sixth.

“Amir did well to get up and stop Limond two rounds later, but if I got the chance to hit him, he would stay hit and not get up.”

GoldenPalace.com is renowned for their highly valued support of boxing. They have got behind the careers of ring legend Bernard Hopkins, WBC Light Welter Champ Junior Witter and stand out talent Carl Froch, the fast rising WBC #1 and British super middleweight king.

This proposal is the most recent extension of their long term support for Hennessy Sports.

“After following the career of Thaxton and Khan, we decided to intervene and attempt to hurry up the process for what we all feel would be a spectacular bout between two champions,” said Richard Rowe, CEO of Goldenpalace.com.

Hennessy Sports head Mick Hennessy is equally as keen to see the showdown.

“Politics and money can prevent big fights from happening in Britain, but we are willing to take those out of the equation to try and make Jon Thaxton versus Amir Khan happen on October 6,” he said.

Has Khan fought a natural light weight yet? After the Limond performance Thaxton would bust him up bad.

I don't know if he would or not but I don't like to hear people talking smak if they don't show a willingness to back it up and as was pointed out thaxton has challenged him on a number of occasions, its unfair to have a go at someone when the majority of the british public don't know the full story. I hope Hennessy buys Thaxton a ringside seat.

I can't see Khan beating Thaxton in a couple of fights time. A couple of years perhaps but even then I am not sure.

Just as I'm starting to like Khan, he comes out with this drivel. Thaxtons never seemed short on stamina from what i've seen of him, so I'm not sure how Amirs come to the conclusion that hes a 5 round fighter!!!!

Amirs full of BIG words of how he'll deal with Thaxton, but hes still insisting on another 2 fights before he gets in the ring with him. Put Up or Shut Up!! Get the fight on for Saturday Dec 8th.

Thaxton wins by LATE stoppage IMO

Also Kahn was huffing and puffing badly in the Limond fight, he looked exhausted when the KO came!

It seems Khan and his family are modelling themselves on Naz and how to turn the public against you.

I like Khan (dispite David Cameron mentioning him in his speach) but I think saying that stuff is stupid. Was interesting to see he said that he has worked on his defence a lot since a "wake up call" from Limmond.

It will be very interesting to see how Khan coped with having to adopt a more measured approach.

Up until now he has relied on speed, movement and punch volume to win fights, I wonder if his effectiveness and confidence might not be reduced by him having to tuck that chin in behind his guard.

Khan seems like the sort of fighter who likes to let his hands go, I have my worries that tightening that defence up, may also tighten up his style, and perversely, give his opponents more time to land their own shots.

Well put - it might end the premature pay day dream, and boxingchat will probably think we are having a party over it, but it will teach him more than any trainer can

If Khan fights Jon Thaxton anytime soon his next opponents record after Thaxton will read won 5 lost 15 and a draw - Jon will put him to sleep quicker than a needle in the arm - Ian Napa might even be able to KO him - I can be a cruel bastard at times especially with mouthy kids.

Now that's a really good point. I hadn't really considered this but what you're saying makes perfect sense. Will be interesting to see...

Khan needs to be more respectful ! to his peers. Labelling Thaxton a five round fighter is just plain ridiculous! Does Amir really believe the silly statement he has come out with?

Whoever's advising Khan needs to be brought to bed. The more Khan comes out with silly comments like this, the more the public will be waiting, hoping is some cases, for him to crumble i.e. the last fight Limond in which Khan nearly lost.

Thaxton has called Amir out time & again, yet all Khan does is reply, never stepping up to the plate. I for one hope Khan vs Thaxton doesn't happen when Thaxton is past it.

Khan talked about how he'll win three titles at three different weights. That's laughable! Khan hasn't even won one world title. Khan does himself no favours by these silly statements.

The way Amir's talking, anyone would think he's the best. I remember him once saying he'd like to go four rounds with Floyd Mayweather. :D

I do support Khan, I think he is a nice kid but if one talks like that and doesn't step up to the plate it invites inevitable criticism. Its particularly unfair on Thaxton who has offered to fight him for free because Jo Public will not hear that and just hear Khan acting the big man and Thaxton not being in the ring with him.

look fella, dont jump down my throat, I say it as I see it. Ive been on this board for many years and I never stir up any trouble, so please dont preach to me about racism as Ive been through it and would not like my worst enemy to go thru what Ive been thru.
My post is not in the least racist, read it again and I would invite any mod to read it and put me right.

This is a boxing forum and Im talking about Amir Khan and why so many UK fans diss him. Isnt he allowed his share of the cake and eat it especially after whats he's accoplished so far.

I support all our UK fighter prospects no matter what background and I think we all should!
I say it as I see it too --- and Ive not come across a racist post on this section. Not one. The best conversation on here is in British Scene.

I know your post was not racist, but if you are in search of it, as I said, you are probably looking in the wrong place.

And if you think that was preaching, you obviously mix with very taciturn people. You don't need to talk to an Irishman about the evils of prejudice, I assure you.

I support British Fighters too, but ask me who I want to do better - Danny Williams or Amir Khan? Both Muslims, but very different people. I support anyone who gets in there and gives it a good go, but I reserve the right to lessen that support for the overbearingly smug.

I don't want to get off on the wrong foot with you - you might have been registered for a few years, but I've not come across you before, as far as I know - I just thought the post was an unwarranted criticism of the nicest group of people on here.
