There were two well-known boxing refs prior to WW2 named Ed Smith. One was Ed J. Smith alias Gunboat Smith, the former world contender. The other was Edward W. Smith the noted Chicago sportswriter. There are several fights listed for Gunboat Smith (Pelkey-McCarty springs to mind) that were actually refereed by Eddie Smith of Chicago.
