Setanta last night.

Post by the patriot »

I've just watched the boxing from the US last night, some great fights there but I wish Setanta would use a 'real' anchorman. I actually like Steve Bunce as a pundit with his enthusiasm but he's no front man.

The main event was a cracker, it looks like Khan has a way to go to challenge these guys. And I was impressed with the heavyweight Mike Mollo, hopefully he's someone who can inject a bit of life into the big guys.

Mollo did a good feint to unleash that left hook, but he's lost to DeVarryl Williamson by KO and doesn't have a right hand. Really, even Roman Greenberg can actually pull off 1 or 2 moves like that.

With young heavyweights, the master of feints, compact punching, fast hands etc has to be 2004 Olympic super heavyweight medallist Alexander Povetkin. He's a few levels above Mollo.

Bunce was nearly turning into a "so bad its good" kinda performance last night. He actually said at one stage "I think Woodhall is doing a good job with the punditary tonight" and then talked about it for a bit.

What does Dempsey do at Setanta - I haven't seen him at all yet, apart from Hatton.

Juan Diaz was very exciting. 100punches a round - WOW, outstanding stamina. Not just that but his punch picking, combinations were sintilating. If he gets a good strength coach and conditioner he will be true great of the sport. I can't see anyone at lightweight beating him. Cassamoya is too old, David Diaz is average, Pacquiao would be outboxed and outworked.

Juan Diaz is too weak to fight Hatton and probably carries 5lbs of fat on that jelly belly of his. I think Juan could make 130 or 126.

I think in a couple of years Khan-Juan Diaz would be a great fight.

Mollo hasn't got what it takes to scuceed against the best.

I agree with all that - has to be some calls now for Juan Diaz to make the lower reaches of the P4P stakes - I mean stopping Freitas and Julio Diaz (who I'd tip to beat David Diaz) is pretty good form.

It was a very good fight, well worth sitting up for. Juan Diaz is looking red hot on recent form, very exciting fighter and one who's not afraid to take a shot to land 3's and 4's, great watch. Pity about how it ended, I had a feeling Julio was not going to see the end bell when I saw the punch's Juan landed in round one and thought if Freitas pulled out against him, Julio would be hard pushed to see the late rounds. Had Juan got a KO, rather that a retire what an even better fight it would have been with a sweet finish.

He's a hectic fighter, but he has a mature look. Winning the title at 20 has really made him. He blocks punches quite well, sits down on his shots more these days, and throws a solid jab. He never used to jab much at all, but since he signed with King he looks exciting AND mature. The turnig point was the Fernando Angulo fight. Ppl complained that Juan had slowed down etc but really he'd just settled down a bit & developed.

Julio is the 2nd fighter whose heart he's broken in title fights now. I think American needs exciting young champions with so many boring veterans clogging the sport's veins so it's great to see guys like Pavlik & Diaz come out with big performances.

Will Juan be able to fight Pacquiao? Surely Golden Grahams are upset about when Diaz "signed" with them only to end up with King? This could bugger up negotiations and it's pretty clear that Manny wouldn't relish fighting what Juan calls himself: "a young Mexican in his prime."

Like others I was really impressed with The Baby Bull last night and thougt he looked fairly complete, with a Zack Padilla (remember him?)-esque punch output.

He was turning his shots over and they were thudding home with fair regularity. Despite a lowish KO % he will sicken plenty of people with his outstanding workrate and excellent combination punching.

It was a war from the off- no 'feeling out' opening round, just straight down to it - excellent, high quality stuff.!

Lets see Bunce back in an analyists role - he is no anchorman, that much is for sure..

there was only 1 presentation problem and that was being made to wait and having loads of filler because of HBO. didn't like that "tribute" to Jones-Tito -that was corny fvckrags.

Colonel Bob wasn't too bad - a bit more toned down than usual, or was it because I was watching late?

Bunce and Woodhall did a good job of holding the fort through two fight cards, given that there was only 2 of them to do it, a shit drawn out undercard etc.

They made mistakes nearer to the end but that's not surprising in the circumstances. Bunce as usual shows knowledge AND a sense of humour - with the ad breaks, & Colonel Bob: "it was graphic and I'm only talking about the commentary..." - and Richie is always a perceptive analyst. Obviously I disagree with what he says about Mollo being able to do really well though...

From Setanta's end... I thought the presentation was not bad...

In the York Hall, it was pretty good, Richie Woodhall was quite good, ITV/Setanta duo Duke (who has calmed down alot) and John are decent, the MC was ok, maybe not so vibrant but decent...

Bunce has enthusiasm and has a place as a pundit but he ain't that slick and he's like a weeble - he never stands still!

A really enjoyable nights boxing though from both cards... Juan Diaz really is something.

i didn't enjoy the British card. I'm not keen on any of the fighters and I hate WBU style events. This reminded me of old Sky shows, like Michael Gomez getting battered by a Hungarian after making some kind of world claims (I believe).

More like five years and if Diaz looses a fair bit of power by then through age. In a couple of years Khan still wouldn't have a snowballs chance in hell! any one off those shots would put him to bed as has been pointed out many times; you cant train a frail chin. Watching this fight had me fearing for Khan. The way the media are stirring things up they are making a rod for Khans back! if due to the hype; Khan is forced into a contest with this calibre of opponent the dream is over.

Juan Diaz is a phenom: its unbeliveable that he has had some many fights at such a young age and has also managed to go through college to boot.

Khan should take a long, hard look at the Diaz performance last night and realise the level he has to reach.

Whilst Diaz appears chunky and a little over weight that must just be his body type - the kid was in awesome shape to maintain his puch output round on round.

why not phone 'em up, make a big deal out of it & see if they'll give you a month free? seems to work with a lot of ppl with cable TV packages

I was annoyed with the Barrera-Pac 2, but I saw the replay so wasn't too fussed. Also, it was a depressing - Pac looked technically poor, Barrera timid - conservative spectacle. I would have been more pissed off if the pic went during Andrade-Mack last week or Diaz-Diaz this week.

I've checked my Winky-Taylor DVD and we lost a full minute from one of the rounds. Does that mean Sky aren't worth it either?

It just means you'll miss out on some terrific live fights...from the Uk and USA

I am presuming Diaz-Diaz on Setanta 2? I brought a new digital box with a Setanta package and taped the earlier British stuff but left my video running into the early hours only find a 3am shutdown?!

I was robbed

I really enjoyed Setanta's coverage, particularly because they began their transmission at an earlier time (7.30pm) and started with the undercard fights first. I much prefer to watch the build-up before the main event and wish SKY would return to this policy.

Paul Dempsey will front Calzaghe-Kessler on Setanta.

Think that was the first time I've seen Juan Diaz, but was massively impressed by him. He reminded me a bit of a young Tyson, with the blurring speed he threw those hooking combos. Accurate too.

I thought he looked to be punching really hard as well, putting his full weight behind some of the those shots, but it's a surprise to see he's only scored around 50% KO's.

A match at LW with Hatton would be some fight.

Not someone Khan wants to be taking on any time soon, that's for sure.

Was looking through his record, and it suggests to me that he is the kind of fighter who if his opponent goes into their shell, is content to let it go the distance, but if they try and press him, hands out a steady stream of punishment.

I was pretty disgusted that they cut rounds out from the replay - not the ones where the transmittion cocked up, but other rounds.

Winky vs Taylor was fine for me.

Setanta replays are crap - they only show main events. But it allowed me to get the late rds of Pac-Barrera so I don't care too much.

But Sky replays aren't so hot either - we get one at 2am and one at 6am. although in full Friday Fight Nights replays are hard to catch if you fall asleep or have a lay in...

I take it Juan won then? I should have skipped this thread but assumed it would be about the British leg of the bill and am bored whilst working, I was hoping to avoid the result.

Maybe a spoiler warning?
SORRY MATE BUT COME ON!!! A thread titled 'Setanta last night' on Sunday morning - if someone was avoiding the result it isn't the best thread to click on is it?

Its not just beating them its the way hes beaten them that impresses me. He seems to dominate every round against top competion. 100 powerpunches a round, beautifully timed, beautiful technique, tight defense, works his way inside beautifully, makes good use of the jab. Hes dominated 2guys that gave Castillo, Cassamoya and Corrales problems.

Now only if he could build up his strength a bit he'd easily add power to his P4P package. His lack of power made
