Officially Welcome Harry!
This may be something for you. The Ring mag. ran a serie on historical hwgt contenders from different decades. Part one (The Ring, June 78) is about the "Tex Richard era", icluding a portrait on Jack Renault, Canada.
According to the author, Herbert G. Goldman, Renault boxed his LAST bout on December, 21, 1931, a ko loss to Joe Crawford.
BoxRec archive has two Jack Renault hwgt records, one including the bout mentioned above. However, that record continues with three other bouts; a ko loss to Nathan Mann in 1935 and two early ko losses to John Andersson in 1936. (There's also a lightweight Jack Renault).
My query; Could it have been another Jack Renault, boxing in the 30's, as the canadian Renault probably retired in 1931?
Best wishes!
:)

It's a different Jack Renault. I think "Tiger" Jack Renault out of New Jersey (I think). This is the most recent record that I have for the Canadian Jack Renault:

Harry-Canadian hwgt cont. Jack Renault
Thanks a lot Barry! Very interesting. Are you the one to call for queries about hwgts from that era? (Among the very competend staff of editors).
So, the ko loss to Joe Crawford does belong to "Tiger Jack Renault? Is it possible that Herbert G. Goldman mixed up the two Renaults in his article?
Time will tell. (Harry-I got more for you)!

Ring ran the result in the (Heavyweight) results section in the 30s, but several issues later stated that it was a mistake, stating that it was "Tiger" Jack Renault who was knoced out by Crawford and that the Canadian Jack Renault had never been knocked out, which was also incorrect. Billy Miske knocked Renault out of the ring in their January 28, 1922 bout and Renault did not beat the count.
Here's a link where they say that Jack Renault returned to boxing, and fought some big names before quitting the game in 1936.

Harry - Canadian hwgt cont. Jack Renault
The debate continues...
Here's extracts from an (in memoriam)article in The Ring, Dec, 1967, by Jersey Jones (ass. editor).
"The month's most prominent obituary item was Jack Renault, the French-Canadian who rated among the top heavyweights of the '20s. The news from Sherbrooke, Quebec, reporting his age as 73, but statistics in The Ring's files had him a few month shorter of 70.
In a ring career spanning from 1919 to 1931, Renault (6-1, 195) was credited with a total of 86 bouts of wich he won 57 (33 by knockouts), drew 1, lost 15 decisions, was knocked out twice, engaged in 9 no-decision affaires and two outings were declared no contests....
...Renault was a busy competitor until 1931, when the wear and tear of his industrious career finally caught up with him, and he called it a career after he'd been knocked out in two rounds by a Joe Crawford in Peu, Indiana.
Hanging up the mittens, Jack hied himself out to Los Angeles, toiled for a while at the Douglas Aircraft plant, then was a pinboy in a bowling emporium.
That was the last we had heard about him until the recent dispatch reporting his passing in Sherebrooke."
Well, conclusion of this article is that he hang them up in 1931. The record is yet a matter of comparing several versions of different sources.
This other "Tiger Jack Renault is focused with new interest?

The late Tim Leone, former director and historian for the IBRO wrote an interesting note about Ring in an early IBRO journal. He talks about how for so many years "Ring" files and books were considered the "gospel" even though Nat Fleisher often knew that many records were incorrect. Instead of changing typeset and correcting errors, Ring continued to run errors in the same typeset, which was carried out until I think the 1984 RRB when Herb Goldman took over and started reformatting and correcting records. I'll dig out the article by Mr. Leone and type it out...it's very good.
To give due credit -- the Ring Record Book started picking up when Bert Sugar took over as editor -- besides bringing on many top researchers, Herb Goldman, Tracy Callis, etc, he was committed to ferreting out errors.
I believe bert's first volumne was 1980, those years saw many great additions.
Then Herb absolutely ruined it by adding ND wins and losses!!
