Today in boxing history....

Post by elmersalsa »

70 years ago...October 29th, 1937: Henry Armstrong, the greatest pound per pound fighter of all-time by many historians, wins the first of his 3 world titles when he stopped in onlhy 6 rounds world champion Petey Sarron.

20 years ago....October 29th, 1987: Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns become the first man in boxing history to win 4 world titles in 4 different weight classes when he crushed in only 4 rounds middleweight contender Juan Roldan of Argentina in Las Vegas, NV. Hears did a feat that nobody into that day had accomplished... The greats Henry Armstrong and Alexis Arguello failled to do what Hearns did on this day.

..the armstrong titles were for held all at the same time for a while. there were only eight titles then and they were universally recognized. armstrong's titles were not of the alphabet category, and there were no half-step titles between the ones he held.

hearns' accomplishments were good, but on a title basis they do not compare to armstrrong's, for the reasons listed above. for example.. not held at the same time, weight classes that didn't exist in armstrong's time..etc.

do not come yammering back at me comparing hearns and armstrong as fighters.....this is just about the TITLES.

(elmer...i am not referring to you specifially when i say don't come yammering back....i'm talking to everybody)

Sarron wasn't World Champion. He was simply the last title claimant Armstrong beat to unify the World Featherweight Championship.

Armstrong won championships in three old-school-eight divisions. Hearns won none.

Still, great accomplishments by both fighers, though. :TU: :TU: :TU:

Oct. 30 1967, Gypsy Joe Harris won a close dec. over Irish Bobby Cassidy at the Philadelphia Arena.
Distinguishing thing about this fight was Cassidy had Gypsy Joe down in the 9th round.
Joes lack of training in this one almost cost him the fight.
The crowd booed the dec.
