I find it hard to believe that anyone could have 500 or more fights. The long standing amateur, even the career amateur would have to fight 30 times a year for 17 years non-stop to get to those numbers. When you consider common colds, small injuries, the day to day interferences of school or work, it would be very difficult to keep such pace. Stevenson, Savon, Horta, Casamayor and the "pro" amateurs of Cuba packed over 300 but none came close to 400...and they were full time amateur fighters being taken from international event to international event in constant tours. 400 and 500 figures seem very blown out of proportion and with the execption of the fighters from pro-amateur countries, I would doubt many US fighters having over 300 amateur fights.

it's possible..

Post by KO123 »

Hey Enrique,,

It's very possible for a person to have that many fights.. In the amateurs you fight in State, Regionals then nationals and that is most of the time 15 fights to win one national championship.. There are 5 of those tournaments each year. US, PAL, GG, Ringside and Under 19 not to mention the Silver Gloves, JO's and internation duals and tounaments.. Go on the web site of USA Boxing and look at some of the top boxers and see how many fights they have had this year alone and those are just the national and international fights and not the states and resionals to took to get the the nationals and international duals. Then on top of what I listed you still have show fights in every state almost every weekend...

Whoops, that was Mike McCallum's record not Don's.

Can anyone point me to a site which has accurate details of fighters
amateur records? Cannot seem to find a reliable record of Don Curry's amateur achievements.

Well I think the one above is pretty accurate. But saying that, I heard he'd only lost one amateur fight. So who knows?

Is it true that in the US amateur game they count sparring with rated, same weight amateurs as fights? Hence why they have so many.

This is an old thread now but I just noticed it.
I put forward Dick McTaggart of Scotland the Olympic Lightweight Champion in 1956 and Bronze medallist in 1960 who won 610 out of his 634 amateur fights.

There are kids in Usa with 100 fights at age 12. Some fights close to 30 times a year staring at age 8. Even worse is sum kids are being forced to starve damn near to death to make weight smh. All those fights and damn near starving to death = child abuse and its easy to.see why so many kids end up quitting boxing

Numbers, numbers, numbers...
Please, do not speculate. Provide their fightrecords and that will be the end of the discussion.
It seems that to many in this thread belives in hearsay. But, here on BoxRec we do relay on facts, don´t we?
