Today's Sun Newspaper - Colin Hart

Post by jamesmcdonnell »

For anyone who is interested, a review of Charlie Magri's book is in there, and apparently it's stonker......but I knew that anyway :TU:

Terry, should be a copy winging it's way to you.

Kev, shame you left when you did, all the big names turned up not long after you left. Mike Tyson was there!

Not really made that bit up.

Sorry mate had to go and cover the Mickey Helliet's show.

Had a quick read on the train last night but haven't had a good look at it yet, I'll have to try and get hold of a copy of the sun. Was Hart there?

No, he received a review copy some time ago. There were a few boxing writers I recognised there, but none of the really big guns like Rawling, Buncey etc.

Cracking review from Colin, I'm made up.

Just read it. Magri won four ABA titles (as opposed to three) but it's an easy mistake to make - Harty knows more than I ever will. Magri was a frightening puncher. He destroyed more fighters than Nigel Benn ever did. Even Duke nearly bursts into tears when he remembers how hard Magri hit him in 1986 - and Duke won the bloody thing.
It was Magri's last fight.

Yeah I watched that fight the other day, and even past his best, Charlie fought with frightening intensity. Duke showed the class of a world champ to stay composed and tuck up and ride out the storm.

From talking with Charlie, I think that he burned himself out by training way too much, the guy was never ever out of the gym, aside from when he was injured, he trained every single day of his life from the age of 10 onwards.

I'm meant to be going for some training sessions down in Charlie's Gym in the basement, god help me poor old body!

People said Charlie was chinny but he was only vulnerable when he punched himself out, so to beat him you had to take his best punches first. Believe me, that was a lot easier said than done.
I had the pleasure to watch Charlie finally come good and win a world title in 1983 at Wembley. He won on a cut but the cut saved Eleoncio Mercedes from getting knocked out. Charlie was doing a real number on the Dominican. Sadly, he punched himself out against the iron-jawed Filipino Frank Cedeno in his first defence and was stopped. In a later world title attempt, he really cracked Sot Chitalada and the great Thai gave a grin that can only be regarded as sickly.

The Sun's a good read and you should get your news from all sources. As the most read paper in the UK, it is an important document to chart the feelings of the nation.

If you are interested in media, you're a moron if you don't read it.

I saw Kevin Mitchell (not the boxer) and John Dillon there, plus a couple of local paper guys.

I co-wrote it with Charlie, officially I'm the 'General Editor'

Amusing for anyone who has ever had to edit my own stuff.

Well you're certainly a moron when it comes to grammar and punctuation....

Additionally, by your logic, 10 million Britons are morons because they read The Sun. Hmmmm some individuals would suggest that is a gross generalization, and would throw their arms up in horror if you suggested that another sizeable group was composed of morons.

What Charlie did?

I find it hard to imagine, as Charlie had regular sparring partners in Jimmy McDonnell, Ray Cattous and Ivor Jones.

The C*nt of the day award goes to E, in fact give him the annual award based on the evidence thus far. Why do you have a pop about grammar when someone disagrees with you?

You are on an Internet fourm, not reading The Guardian, self-consciously, on the train.
Um that is only a small, facetious part of my argument...... Besides, as already explained, I read the Sun not the Grauniad (sic).

Personally I get my secretaries to present me with the news and I assimilate the information. We're basically f*cked all round.

Lord you have secretaries?????????? Do you get to spank them if they make any errors?????

Both decent points... I guess it's to do with balance.

Anyway I'm off to eat a crap sandwich and read the Sun, enjoy the weekend!
