Woolcombe v Portman

Post by bmc »

Peoples promoter Frank Maloney has saved the show at wigan by making Gary Woolcombe v Marcus Portman.
Well done on saving the ppv show, shame it isn't a decent name involved tho.
Looks like the hard earned 15squid is gonna be based on one fight.

Good fight.

It will be one for the purists: tall, non-punching southpaw Portman against skilful, improving Woolcombe.

Whilst i expect Woolcombe to outpoint Marcus, it will probably be a close-run affair for however long the fight is set for.

If Portman doesn't get caught early, then this will be an interesting fight.
I like watching Woolcombe, and it will be interesting to see if he's learnt from the Facey fight, he seemed to run out of ideas early on in that one.
And Portman is a tall rangy southpaw, so it won't be easy.
Both lads looking to step up to the British title mark as well, i'm going for Woolcombe in a hard fight, by late stoppage

Podmore - personal interests aside and knowing what you know, can you build up any case for Portman getting this chance ?

Not really, in all honesty.

Yes, he has won the WBF light-middleweight belt this year, beating tough but limited Jozsef Matolcsi twice, but aside from that he hasn't really beaten anyone nearing British title level since making his return in the summer of 2006.

He did outscore George Hillyard in a good eight-rounder in December, but that isn't enough to warrant a British title shot, in my opinion at least.

I like Marcus, and am pleased he has got this big chance, but surely a phone call to Ryan Rhodes would have pleased more people – especially you, twenty-six.

However, I give Marcus a chance if he can draw Woolcombe on to his long lefts and rights. Although he doesn’t hit with the same authority as Andrew Facey, Portman’s arms are just as long and he is southpaw, remember.

Portman, now using his feet and making every inch of his height advantage count , is a better fighter than the one that was mauled in one round by Chris Saunders in 2004.

From my memory, Woolcombe starts fast but can lose impetus and a bit of heart if he doesn't get his man under control and/or out of there. Facey broke his heart a bit in there. Not sure if Portman has improved enough to win this one but he gets a decent shot at it.

The phone call was made, Tom.
My anger is more at posters who continually slag certain boxers off, about always fighting stiffs never stepping up etc and they do not understand boxing politics.
Rhodes was / is ready and the fight was there to be made with everyone's blessing for a change.
Now you tell me that Rhodes v Woolcombe is not a better alternative on a PPV event for Sky than this.
For justification for the alternative speak to Maloney.

I can understand your frustration at some of us who post negative things on this forum, but we do it from the perspective of being a boxing fan.
We basically want to see the best fights out there, but quite often get mismatches in there place.
Obviously you are alot closer to the workings of making these matches then i ever will be. So it does piss you off when you read some of the things written here.
Its nothing personal though, just us being frustrated.

Appreciate that Ian - but I think it's given out more against certain boxers - and Rhodes is in that group.
Anyway onwards and hopefully upwards.
Maybe Rhodes v Pryce will happen.

Yeah that'll be a great fight to make. I promise to not moan about Rhodes if that fight is on :TU:

Isn't Rhodes under contract with alledgedly Frank?
Would he allowed him to fight on a Maloney show?

What a great PPV card we have - plus Matthew Hatton in the states!

IS THIS THE BEST PPV EVER?

you're being sarcastic right?.......a flyweight contest for the British title involving a guy who's lost 12 times (I must have read that wrong surely, I'll check)....another Brit title with two lads who found out about it this week (Woolcombe vs. Portman), though admittedly Woolcombe had been in training for a fight already on Friday, albeit 8 rounds, what about Portman though? Who I've never seen box. Incidentally has Michael Jones now retired following his loss to Picherillo, I think he's better than both of these.
For me I'm looking forward to Nuumbembe - Watson which I'm hoping will be a good fight. I favour Nuumbembe here, not sure how much Watson has got, plus against Robert Lloyd Taylor it lasted a minute so he's not really been all that active. I can't remember off the top of my head what the other title fight involved is, but as support to the big fight in the states I don't think it's a bill that lights the blue touch paper exactly (though admittedly not much could be done about the Moore situation in th eshort time allowed).
As for Matthew Mouthpiece on the undercard in America......just check out thread "Cry Hatton for Harry England and St. George" to find out about this gob-sh*te.

I am being sarcastic, this is not a good card at all.

I will not be watching ( apart from the Ali N fight).

I have to say for Woolcombe v Portman to be topping the bill of the UK side of the Hatton v Mayweather show is not on.

It has to be a nightmare for Frank Maloney and Steve Wood to get a decent undercard on but to be blunt - the fight they have got really isn't on.

I would be very interested to know who Frank and Steve tried to get in as replacements.

This is a big night for Sky and I am sorry the standard of the UK show is a little short of befitting such an occasion.

Jamie Moore in a European Title fight justifies the money in my book 100% and then onto watching Hatton!!!

But ... as soon as the promoters knew of Jamie's withdrawal surely there had to be a higher profile fight - Sky and the promoters could have found the money for??

I will stress I think Frank and Steve do a bloody brilliant job in difficult circumstances but Portman v Woolcombe is not for me!!

pretty hard to get a high profile fight at 7 days notice. They replaced jamie with two title fights.
