ditto tomato can. plus, with so many titles now, and far fewer fighters, just go through the underrated lists and guys who didn't get a shot list and , it's hard to see how Bivins,Marshall and Burley , to name the most obvious, could be frozen out or Moore, for one , would have to wait so long for a title shot. Ezzard Charles wouldn't be able to beat the GOOD big heavyweights of today, but he never made much money as heavyweight champion, but would probably march through the super middles, lightheavys and cruiserweights and earn the prestige and money those titles would bring. People who never saw Ezzard at 171 would also see why those who did think he is very high on any all-time pound for pound list. Of course, if Roy Jones got to those titles first, Charles wouldn't get a shot at him....and I am not a Roy Jones basher...i just don 't think his parents raised any stupid children.
Charles is one of the best fighters of all-time. He would be among the best from 160-190Lbs in any era. Thru his first 100 bouts he went 87-12-1. Thru these fights the only fighters he faced and did not beat or draw with are:
Kid Tunero a close decision loss in his 28th bout, no rematch
Nino Valdes a close decision loss in his 94th bout, no rematch
Harold Johnson a close decision loss in his 95th bout, no rematch
Rocky Marciano x2, a close decision loss in his 98th bout, and an 8th round KO in his 99th bout(Charles was ahead on points and the bout was almost stopped due to a bad cut on Marciano's nose before Marciano came back to stop Charles)
His other losses thru his first 100 bouts came against-
Ken Overlin- his first loss in 21 bouts, a close decision loss, he later drew with Overlin
Jimmy Bivins- he went 4-1 vs Bivins lifetime
Lloyd Marshalll- he went 2-1 vs Marshall lifetime
Elmer Ray- he went 1-1 vs Ray lifetime
Jersey Joe Walcott x2- he went 2-2 vs Walcott lifetime
Rex Layne- he went 2-1 vs Layne lifetime
add the fact that he also beat-
Charely Burley x2
Joey Maxim x5
Archie Moore x3
Gus Lesnevich
Bob Satterfield
Joe Louis
and many other good fighters.
No way! Roy Jones Jr would never give him a chance. Charles would give most of todays HWs trouble as well. Charles would have excellent chances of beating Ruiz, Byrd, a past his prime Holyfield(ever notice how much they look alike?), Johnson, Oquendo, and many others.

It is NOT true that if I see a crowd gathered to, say, look at a fire or auto accident I will use that occasion to say "While we're all here, I'd like to say a few words abnout Ezzard Charles." However, I'd like to add to my fellow Ezz fan Hookie's excellent post. Ken Overlin was one of the slickest trickiest fighters ever...much too experienced for Ezz at that time. managers admitted they took a chance making that bout..a win would have thrust Ezzard into a high rating, and Overlin was not a puncher and not dangerous, and even the close lost added a bit to Ezz's prestige. Kid Tunero...a great fighter and very smart.Ezz said "I just froze that night. He was making moves I never saw before." His losses to Bivins and Marshall were his only fights that year..he was in the army and really couldn't train. plus, no shame in losing to those greats. Walcott IV starts me on a tirade, and I've printed excerpts on other threads. A robbery pure and simple..fight was not even close...in fact first two wins over Walcott were a little closer. RexLane...referee was Dempsey, a Mormon, Layne was a Mormon and the fight was in Utah!!! Dempsey was the sole judge, and he called it 2 rounds for Layne, one for Charles and...eight even!!!!! Caused a fuss outside of Utah. Ring magazine called it a slugfest with Charles the winner. Elmer Ray....Charles's debut in New York. One judge gave it to Charles eight rounds to two! I'm not trying to make a claim that Ezzard was always robbed or that he was perfect...but just clarifying these particular losses on his record. No complaints about the kayo by Walcott, for example. Although the left hook was the great punch that knocked Charles cold, it wasn't a 'lucky "shot. Walcott had hurt Ezzard inthe body a couple of times just prior to that, and Ezzard had his right hand down a little for protection, and Walcott just walked right out from being against the ropes and landed a beauty. See...I do give credit where credit is due.

How about the great Scot Ken Buchanan, or the Panamanian Ismael Laguna? Those two fighters I don't think any lightweight today would have come close to them. Great boxers that came in a WRONG TIME!!!
I also BELIEVE GREAT ONES like Kid Gavilan, Luis Manuel Rodriguez, Esteban DeJesus or even Nino Benvenutti would have great careers $$$$$$$ today.
