Mirovic sacks Angelo Hyder

Nine time Australian Heavyweight Champion Bob Mirovic today announced that he has parted ways with trainer & manager Angelo Hyder citing he has lost faith in him and wished to make the most of what he has left in his career.

Speaking for the first time publicly since Hyder was advised he had this to say "I am a realist in knowing that I am heading towards the end of my career and it will be a one step at a time approach. I have every bit of confidence in Jeff perhaps bringing out the best in me without the theatrics and face slapping antics of Angelo. I knew my time was up with him when I had to warn him on the stool not to slap again as I am sick of it. I am the first person to acknowledge that "you cant teach an old dog new tricks" however I believe Jeff’s first to the punch and aggressive go forward style of training maybe just what I need to finish off my opponents. I have given a great account of myself against many top 5 world rated opponents and feel that perhaps if I had Jeff in my corner against Hoffmann or Botha that I would have had a better chance of winning the fight. I have known Stuart Duncan a long time and approached him to take over my career in the hope that he can get me meaningful fights in the USA. I have every bit of confidence in the team I have surrounded myself with and look forward to a big 2008.

Trainer Jeff Fenech said that he was looking forward to working with Bob and felt he knew how to improve on Bob’s style without necessarily trying to change it too much. “Anyone who saw his fight with Timo Hoffmann in Germany would know he was robbed. You only have to look at his fight 5 months ago where he took Francois Botha 44W – 4L the distance over 12 rounds in South Africa to know that Bob still has plenty left in the tank. We will take a warm up fight early in 2008 and I will spend plenty of time preparing him for a good opportunity mid year”.

Manager Stuart Duncan confirmed he will be back in the USA early January, though he was doubtful anything could be arranged then. "Nothing happens in January in boxing over there, all the decision makers & matchmakers are on vacation" said Duncan. He confirmed that “Bob will take a warm up fight in Singapore or Indonesia early in the New Year and then look at getting a defence of his Australian Title in as well before taking on something more meaningful in the USA. The warm up fight in Asia will give Jeff & Bob a chance to try out what they’re doing in the gym and Nathan Briggs is interested in challenging for the Australian Title which will be the perfect test for Bob before we step it up. With regards to a fight in the USA mid year there are plenty of well known heavyweight of similar age to Bob that would be suitable. James Toney would make for a good fight with the networks over there over 10 rounds as would a shot with Evander Holyfeild. Chris Byrd and a couple of other guys I am getting video on now and hopefully we can make something happen mid year”.

bob is nothing with out angelo,hyder made bob he should be greatful,lost faith,that ain't all bob will lose in the USA,but at least he will get that last one good payday

Well, if Big Bob thinks he has another fight left in him, good luck to him. Somehow I think he has reached his peak and gone past it years ago. His best efort was when he went the distance in an eight rounder with Valuev.

Yeh Mirovic's career as a boxer is finito I think. After the Shane Cameron defeat his fight against Col should have been his last hoorah.
The sort of condition he has been fighting in recently is a bit of a disgrace even for a heavyweight.
Surely he can't be that broke or that lacking of options in life that he has to keep fighting on to keep up the feed bill.

How do you sum up the whole scenario? an over the hill fighter who has now tried to grandstand at the expense of his long time friend and mentor! quote "tired of being slapped around by Angelo", that'll be nothing to whats coming from some half decent heavyweights that may get to try Bob out as a punching bag! And Stuart 'call me hippocrite' Duncan who has publicy spoken out about 'over the hill fighters', guess what? you probably deserve each other!

cannot wait to see how this all pans out!

Yeah, Bob has alreadybeen a punching bag for Meehan and Cameron. I suppose it is some Yank's turn.

I just wish he would retire. he seems to be a nice bloke, but has a real Yugoslav's attitude to his ability.

Well said 'Brute' you sum it up well, nice bloke or not, 'loyalty' is obviously not in his mindset to someone that got him to be the most televised heavyweight and 'viewers choice fighter in 2005 I think it was.
Lets see Haumono in with him for the Aus. H'weight belt to start with before Bob realises he should have hung himself out to pasture.

I saw highlights of Solo's last fight on foxsportsnews and i was deadset impressed, granted that fella was not in his league (pardon the pun) but he has good movement, good power and very good general ringcraft.
I think it would be perfectly safe for him to be moved up in class and dont see why he hasn't been pushed along yet.
Surely he must be sick of of winning so easily.

Well Big Bob and Solo is the perfect fight, but will it happen? I doubt it if Bob wants to keep running around the block a little while longer with some other over the hill has beens. Bob, call it quits before you lose what cred you had.

According to Boxrec, Derek Rosy and old Ray mercer are going to fight for the WBO NABO title. This would seem to leave Kali Meehan without a title. The ANBF do not have Kali in their heavyweight ratings.

Is Kali still an Australian citizen? Can he fight Mirovic to give the Australian Heavyweight title back some credibility?

Am I asking for too much?

Kali would beat Mirovic in about 10 seconds. But I dare say he wouldn't be interested in that fight AND Don King wouldn't allow it anyway...

I am surprised that Meehan and Mirovic have only fought once, Kali stopping Bob in four back in 1999 for the Australian Heavyweight crown, a title Kali has never lost in the ring. Kali KOed Colin Wilson four times between 1998 and 2002.

Maybe it is time Kali and Bob fought again, or maybe Bob should look elsewhere. Meehan is a long way in front of other Australian heavies.

How about a ladder match. The winner gets a shot at the WBF Interim Heavyweight title at westfield shopping center in Broadmeadows. The loser gets to fight for a 'lesser' title at the Elwood RSL
