Jack Johnson:In and Out of the Ring(autobiography)
Im in the process of reading my copy of the recent reprinting of the book by Kessinger Press
(originally published in July 1927).
I think the reason that I never read it earlier was because I had heard
from boxing experts that the book was full of inaccuraces if not tall tales.
But I have to admit it is an interesting book.
and it Seems factual to me as far as what Ive read previously concerning Jack Johnson's life elsewhere.
Anyone else read it?
What do you think?

SAM LANGFORD:In and Out of the Ring(autobiography)
I wonder what Sam would have to say about Johnson.

With all your knowledge and experience you ought to consider writing a book.

Oh, dear, poor old Crankers doesn't like a joke when it's on him.
Why didn't you answer the original posters questions`rather than just add a snide comment?

Why did you choose to post a snide comment in response to the original post rather than offering something constructive?
This pretence of being an authority on boxing is only fooling a couple of dimwits, mate.

I've read the book. I think his thoughts on non boxing topics are more interesting only because he doesn't have anything invested with them. He doesn't give Ketchel or Langford much credit for their efforts against him. He's also bragging how he's as good in shape at 50 as when he was a young man. He wrote this autobiography(some say it was ghost written?) before Bearcat Wright slugged him in the stomach to knock him out.Brutu wrote:Im in the process of reading my copy of the recent reprinting of the book by Kessinger Press

The thing that bothers me the most about the book is that never gives a comment nor reason why he ducked black contenders in the US. (He fought Jim Johnson to a draw in Paris) Why would he fight a black fighter in France and avoid black contenders in the US? I know he was on the run over there, but was Jim Johnson the biggest draw in Europe? I don't think so. He could have made more money fighting Langford,Jeanette,or McVea in Europe. I'm sure those 3 would have swam across the Atlantic to fight for the title

Actually I believe he does give his reason why he never defended his title more against Black fighters, but I think he is quoted about it in one of the forwards.
Yeah,He doesnt mention Joe Choynski knocked him out in round three, but rather the fight was stopped by the police(I guess thats meant the Choynski was ahead on points.)
He claims he went down for the Willard fight because he was promised he could come back to America if he did but was double-crossed.
He said it originally was supposed to be in the tenth round but they didnt deliver the money to his wife at ringside until the 26th,then she gave the signal for him to take a dive.

Langford
I believe I read somewhere was the reason the Langford fight didnt come about was he thought Langford should get only 5 thousand compared to his 35 thousand, which was the same deal the Tommy Burns had before their fight in Australia.
