Pedro Agotso

Post by Robinson »

For some reason I see Agotso as a l;ate 1960s to mind-late 1970s version of a Ossie Ocasio. I am wondering if there is any more film of him available as I only have his fight with Patterson and Foreman.

Thanks

There must be ( albeit, pretty brief ) footage of his bout with Leon Spinks available out there, as it was nationally televised by CBS. Which, as I recall pretty well these three decades later ( hey, might as well boast about it now at 46, while I still can  ), the network's announcers made a big deal out of since Leon ( not yet "Neon" ) took the veteran out in a single round, whereas it had taken George Foreman four rounds to do so the previous year. Of course, Foreman was basically just toying around with Agosto in their match, while Spinks came out hellbent for leather ...

Still, it was a nice notch on Leon's belt as he marched toward his title fight with Ali. Though Scott Ledoux came awfully close to derailing that happening in Spinks' next fight.

Back to the subject of this thread though, unfortunately, those two televised losses are the only times I got to see Pedro fight as I didn't develop my ( soon to be fanatical ) interest in boxing until I was 14 back in 1976. Which, by then, the bulk of his career was over. Though, I did closely follow what remained of it in the pages of THE RING magazine. Being that I've always had an interest in the careers of heavyweight journeyman. An interest that's never really waned over the course of the subsequent 31 some odd years.

Though sadly, these days we have far less of the classic journeyman-types that we used to be able to follow such as Agosto's compatriot ( & two time rival ) Joe "King" Roman, "Cookie" Wallace, Terry Daniels, Billy Daniels, Billy Joiner, Charlie Polite, Obie English, "Scrapiron" Johnson, Mike Boswell, Vic Brown & so, so many more.
Sure, today we have the Demetrius Kings & Mo Wilsons still floating around, but ...
