most ferocious boxer
Who would you guys regard as the 10 or 20 most ferocious fighters of all time - guys you would fear for your life fighting against that really got there opponents intimidated before the fight began. Doesn't matter if the certain fighters were exposed later in there career eg Tyson but in there prime probably before defeat

Guys that play the bully , bad ass role dont really scare a good pro.
Its the real pro the fighters fighter , the guy who can do it all in the ring and is in great shape that will keep you up nights.
Your wondering "Am I training hard enough?" should I be doing more? I know hes gonna come in ready to go twenty freakin rounds.
A guy like Harold Johnson comes to mind. What a pro.
Fritzie Zivic , bust ya up bend the rules.
Some of those Philly middlewights also.
Hart
Briscoe
Watts
Monroe
Dont even think about gettin in the ring with them if your not ready to go to War.
Thats my take anyway.

A lot of (good) fighters were afraid of Joe Louis.Expug wrote:Guys that play the bully , bad ass role dont really scare a good pro.

Joe Gans was feared.
So was Sam Langford (ask Jack Johnson).

Marciano comes to mind as well when it comes to conditioning; unbelievable stamina and endurance that man had, was almost hard for most of his opponents to match the work rate he put into his fights.Guys that play the bully , bad ass role dont really scare a good pro.

Your right on that score pal. The guy that has to stare you down or trash talk you is compensating for some doubt that he has about his own courage. Liston,Tyson, can't stand guys like that. Too many fighters fell for their shit and got psyched out.Expug wrote:Guys that play the bully , bad ass role dont really scare a good pro.

Throw in Carmen Basilio. He was a Marine in WW II(saw a lot more scary stuff in the South Pacific than he did in a boxing ring.) From what I read about Harry Greb,he didn't sound like no pansy either. I'd hang around Archie Moore at his boy's club. He told me he was worried about Foreman when he fought Ali. He told me if Foreman didn't get him early he would come apart. Ol' Arch was right.

Didn't see your reply HH. Marciano---one tough dago. Another guy just came to mind. Irish Bob Murphy. He didn't like Italians. Once tried to pick a fight with Marciano in a restaurant. Broke LaMotta's rib.HomicideHenry wrote:Marciano comes to mind as well when it comes to conditioning; unbelievable stamina and endurance that man had, was almost hard for most of his opponents to match the work rate he put into his fights.Guys that play the bully , bad ass role dont really scare a good pro.

As soon as that contract to fight him is signed , its gonna be on his opponents mind night and day how much this guy is a warrior who brings it nonstop.

there were a lot of relentlous fighters, if they weren't intimidating enough in the knock out sense, Dempsey, Louis, Liston, Frasier, Forman, Tyson some were perhaps feared even more because of as already mentioned you knew you were in for a fight...Greb, Basilio as mentioned, Gene Fulmer, Freddie Mills, guys you could hit allnight long and they wouldn't stop coming at yah, LaMotta, Sam Langford, Henry Armstrong and God knows how many fighters from the turn of the century...
just out & out Hardmen, British fighter Jack 'cast iron' Casey was another, just too many to rule out, little Eric Boon. Today and I'm not saying he'll end up elite class, but he's a bull dog box/fighter always coming forward - tough as they come Alfonzo Gomez, I'd like to see him in some more high profile fights.
that's why fighters, especially in the past paid little attention to Ratings and who the Belt holders were, because ALL honest & noted fighters knew that on any given night it could easily be the other fella's night!

Robinson refused to fight Basilio a third time unless he (Robinson) got all the money.Expug wrote:

(Robinson's way of avoiding the match).
Basilio hated Robinson with a passion for that.
It was Robinson who went to the hospital after their second fight even though he got the decision.
Gene Fullmer got a tiny amount of money for beating Robinson and winning the middleweight title.
Robinson was great at the negotiating table.

As such it would have to be Tyson.
Hitler, Napoleon
A guy I know who spent half of his life in prison told me the only really tough people he came across in his life were 5'8", 5'7" or shorter.

A couple of guys I wouldn't want to be meeting at ring-center...
George Foreman - Goodnight, Irene for me.
Sonny Liston - That snarl. Nooooo thank you.
Jack Dempsey - For sheer ferocity, the benchmark at Heavyweight.
Roberto Duran - The benchmark period.
Julio Cesar Chavez - Duran re-born.
Mickey Walker - Always came to fight & to hurt.
Bernard Hopkins - Not a very pleasant fellow.
While I am plainly the bigger man in comparison to Duran & Chavez, I don't think that would do my confidence much good
