How much money do amateur boxing referees, judges, and matchmakers make?

Make? They are suppose to be given expenses for gas and food. They are volunteers and although we may not always like their decisions, they are a vital part of the sport that is not compensated near enough for the time they put in to it. Some do aspire to move into the pro ranks and use the amateurs as a training ground, while other just love the sport. Matchmakers, however can charge for their services. The value of that service can range from a couple hundred dollars and up depending on the work involved and the quality of the competitors, the venue and the potential generated income of a show. In many cases, coaches and gyms know each other so well that the matching is done at the show by the coaches agreement to a bout. Other times they are done before a show to help insure of at least some made bouts. In those cases no match maker is needed.

As far as I know, none of our AIBA officials are "paid" at international events other than housing, food and airfare to participate in the event. They might get per diem - I'll ask.

At a clinic I was giving last year, one guy got there earlier than me. We sat around talking boxing for a while. He knew the sport. Once the others arrived we began to start the clinic. This guy got my attention and asked how much we get paid. When I told him gas money or food at the concession stand was normal, but not alway given, he asked how much I was getting paid to do the clinic. I told him I was not even getting gas money to do the clinic. He got up and left. I still laugh about that. He's the only one ever to do that at one of my clinics.

Well - if you stick around, the "zeros" multiply. After 21 years, I think I'm up to a 6 zero paycheck! Great story, Ron - usually they hang up on a phone call. I've never had one come to a clinic and walk out; never show up at a show to train, yes.

Let's see - I don't eat hot dogs, thanks to amateur boxing; tie-dye shirts must be an Eastern Thang. You also left out must be deaf and have a great sense of self-esteem so you don't hear and aren't affected by coaches screaming at you - they can be brutal. 8)

Make? Good lord, I lose money doing this thing; and I'm not exactly in a position to be bleeding money.

Just remember that Amateur comes from the Latin word amo, which means to love. As an amateur, you do something because you love it, not for the pecuniary value (another Latin word for you).

no sure how we lost the eric estrada - omero gallegos fight, :-?
but thats boxing,
i have seen coaches throw stuff, make threats, freak out fits...
even watch a coach from alaska empty his water bottle on every official at the judges table...because he dident like the decision..... :o
that one got pretty bad,
but the one thing i havent seen is a decision reversed because of it...
so we gonna roll with that loss and come back harder next time...
so far were 3-1 with a bad decision  .....

Only time you'll see a decision possibly reversed is at a national tournament leading to the selection of our Olympic team, or if the announcer was given the wrong information.

Good fighters Jamie. Thanks for not pouring water on me when Alex lost. I actually had that one tied and gave it to your guy for what he did in the 2nd and 3rd, he really came on after the first and was looking good. But I guess the other judges had it the other way.

thanks amy, i wasent as upset at alex's loss as both of little erics,
alex was a closer fight,
i thought both eric's fights werent as close...
