Enzo Mac's power

Post by Autobarn »

Despite some horrendous opposition (Gunn, Azzaoui), I've come to appreciate the improvements in Enzo Mac's game. He's become more rounded. See how he was letting Dominguez get on his chest, got beaten to the jab by Hobson, then witness how he dominated Braithwaite behind ajab and controlled aggression. He's got a fresh approach. He's gone from being one handed and raw to a fine technical fighter. I like watching him, even if I hate listening to the man.

I don't think that Darnell Wilson who posts on here would have a prayer if the fight ever happened. Mac's as good as he's going to be and win or lose, he has got the Haye fight @ the right time.

But anyway, what do we think of his power? Is his power a bit overrated? He's had some crushing KOs at domestic or WBU level. He became the 1st man ever to stop Dominguez, but dropped Braithwaite and couldn't finish him. Of his recent stoppages, 2 came from illegal-looking shots - he stopped Hobson II with a horrible, slow, borderline rabbit punch. He stopped Azzaoui with a kidney punch when the NZ'er was ducking too low.

Have we got a false impression of him as a power punching monster, just because he's been banging out lesser opposition? IMO we're going to see a very methodical, break-em-down approach whenever he faces someone world class.

I hope you're right about Macca, because I honestly cannot gauge him; judging by the quality of his recent opposition.

How will he cope when an opponent hits him back, especially an opponent who will hit him as hard as he himself punches?

I hope he's up to the task, because I want to see a real fight in March, as I am going!!! :box: :box:

Well, I'll start by disagreeing about the two punches you call as illegal - the Hobson one did catch Mark behind the ear, but he ducked into it as much as anything. As for Azzaoui - oh, come on, Enzo landed a big blow on a wide open target, there was no kidney punch in it.

His power? He definitely has one shot knockout potential, and the blow that nigh on removed Domiguez's head was undeniably impressive. However, I think that power comes from relatively slow hands, so it doesn't translate as well against the top guys as, for example, David Haye's does.

He'd murder the Ding-a-Ling man though, KO by the mid rounds.

The 2 fights were definitely borderline. Was Azzaoui's own fault as he was turning away and bitching all night. The Hobson 2 punch was a weird, sloppy, high shot that was either on the back or side. Either way, Mac couldn't stop Hobson first time, though he dropped him, and it was a "strange" punch that did him in the 2nd. I think Hobson thought he had the punch covered but it hit either the ear or back of head as he pulled out. Like he misjudged it or something.

I agree how hard it is to gauge Enzo, and his power. I mean, we see Glen Johnson, nearing 40, easily beating up fringe contenders (Montell Griffin, Richard Hall, George Khalid Jones) and blown up welterweights (last night's opponent!) but when he fights a fired up Woods (3rd bout) or an awkward Tarver, he's not so dominant, is he? It's easy to look great vs poor opponents.

I'd say for Mac, Braithwaite is a good win. Hobson 1, he won by the skin of his teeth, but he did beat an inspired Hobson who was boxing strongly. Obviously he got Hobson out there early 2nd bout, and Dominguez was no better than "decent" IMO. Azzaoui, Gunn, Lamontagne are unacceptable.

Macca has improved his all round game - A lot of that credit must go down to Calzaghe Snr.

I've never bought into the hype about him being the worlds hardest hitting cruiserweight - That was down to SKY sports and those Johnny Nelson gym visits.

Macca has simply got a tremendous amount of power. And he has vastly improved but does anyone else get the feeling its only a matter of time until he gets KO'd.

Will he beat Haye? Quite possibly.

Will he go on to rule a division? Highly unlikely.

He will however be a daunting propspect for any fighter. He can bang yet his chin is still questionable to this day, that makes a great fight whoever he faces.

Oh and yes!, and being from Swansea myself, I cannot stand to listen to the man and the way the pundits keep going on about how he is so intelligent/articulate!! I dont think so.

i would hardly call the shot against Hobson illegal, just cos it wasn't as nicely packaged as say, Haye's against Bonin. Hobson couldn't get out the way, it hit the top of his head and scrambled his senses.
Hardly Maccarinelli's fault that.
It's also not as though Hobson was just looking for a way out (although I realise noone is suggesting it), he'd already been the 12 with Enzo. He was still a bit scrambled in the interview afterwards if you ask me.

As for Azzouzi fight, don't bother asking me as I was on 'ere posting as I had decided seconds into the contest it was a Daniel to the lions job.

Didn't exactly say illegal. I've referred to it as a strange, or perhaps borderline shot.

dont know what happened with the 2nd hobson

but to my mind Macca's uppercut against Dominques is the best guage....into the deep waters against a tough hombre who had campaigned at HW and at only 5ft 8 (or thereabouts) had managed to go the full 12 against the beast from the east)...macca was able to bring out a peach of an uppercut to ice the south american

thats impressive :box:

But, as you point out, Dominguez had been up at heavyweight, and been for several years, as high as 230-something, so it could be he was drained in coming back down to cruiser.

As for the original point, I DO think Macc has a world class punch, but not exceptionally so in world class terms, if you get my meaning. I think Haye is a bigger puncher, although Macc might be more polished at this stage.

Enzo Mac owes a lot to Enzo Cal both for working on technique and his superb fitness - As with all sport its teamwork that brings success and team Calzaghe are getting plenty of that, and deservably so - The secret of banging hard is in getting your feet placed right, all the power comming through from the legs - Enzo has perfected this and delivers with awesome power - Haye certainly hits hard but moves faster and doesnt set up the punches in the same way Enzo does, therefore I believe Enzo has the bigger punch - Haye will set the pace and Enzo will have to avoid getting caught early because David can certainly bang - If things work out for Enzo, the weight drained Haye will be slowing down by 6 or 7 and Enzo will be looking to set up a sledgehammer to take him out - I cant wait for this fight but TBH I am surprised David has taken it - He said he wouldnt fight again at CW yet here he is fighting Macca who makes the weight easily - The only way Haye can be 100% is at HW - At around 16 stone he would beat Macca but getting down to CW gives Enzo the advantage IMO - Enzo is confident of the win and fitness and good defence should do the trick - Enzo will be looking for a late stoppage while Haye will be trying for the opposite - I dont understand why some people dont like to see Enzo in interviews, what is he saying that you dont like?

it was that bloody awful setanta studio work on the night of haye-mormeck

also, enzo sort of said darnell wilson didn't deserve a shot, when he was preparing to fight ezra sellers (turned out to be azzaoui)

i'm sure enzo mac is a nice bloke, but it's just that sports network fighters very often come across as heels, who are dismissive of their peers.

IMO he's annoyed at the negative publicity he gets - he's not highly regarded in america at all, and us Brits always moan about his opponents - and this may have made him seem a bit of a twat during the studio segments.

methinks enzo's troubles will all soon be over, after he gets haye.

up until the Ko dominques was his usual terrier self...all in maccas face...a tough scrap as it was turning out...but the uppercut was top drawer....the stamina issue wasnt questioned it was a bolt that would have ko'd most cruisers at any point in the fight. given that macca has been whacked more times ....and can dig in in gruelling distance fights.....and seeing that haye goes in with his arms by his waist.....

it would suggest macca is going to stop Haye

but its going to be fun

this one wont go past the 4th

I wasn't questioning Domnguez's stamina, but if he was weight-drained (no suggestion he was; this is just my own thoughts), then a classic symptom is lesser punch resistance.
