Boxer Amir Khan has been banned from driving for 42 days and fined £1,000 for driving up to 140mph on a motorway.

The 20-year-old had been convicted of breaking the speed limit while driving his sports car on the M62 on New Year's Eve in 2006.

Khan was believed to be driving his BMW 6 series convertible at speeds between 135mph and 140mph.

A police officer told Rochdale Magistrates' Court his speedometer was "off the clock" at 155mph as he pursued the Commonwealth lightweight title-holder along the motorway.

Pc Paul Saunders said he travelled almost seven miles before he caught up with the BMW.

Sentencing Khan, 21, of Bolton, district judge Pamela Baldwin said there was not enough evidence to prove the Olympic silver-medalist had exceeded 100mph but she was satisfied that it was in excess of 70mph.

Khan had denied the charge but during his trial accepted his speed may have reached around 75mph.

Outside court, Khan maintained he did not reach speeds of up to 140mph.

He said: "I did not drive that fast. I am not a fast driver.

"I am pleased to get this over with and I have learned my lesson. It will never happen again."

The suspension will run concurrently with the six-month ban he received last October after being convicted of careless driving when knocking down a pedestrian on a pelican crossing.

42 days?

That's hardly a deterrent. Suspect the likes of you and I might be more severely punished!

He's just asking for a Mexican to bash his head on a turn buckle, retire his ass and put on 50lbs.

No doubt the car lobby think it's a ludicrously harsh waste of time for a police force who should be out catching 'real' criminals.

The punishments for speeding and reckless driving of all types is far too lenient considering the damage this driving can do, and 40-something days is evidence of this.

er how about the pc's evidence and the fact he was driving a top of the range BMW.

We know the limit is 70 MPH but thousands every day do up to 90 MPH on motorways and the police seem to take little notice but go near or over the ton and you are asking for trouble - I thought I was about to be pulled at 80 MPH a few weeks back but the cops were more interested in the Aston Martin that had flashed past and was then slowing having spotted the patrol vehicle - Who is Khan kidding saying the officer is a liar, its Khan who is telling porkys - You dont buy a car like a BMW to just tootle round at National speed limits - I have yet to see a BMW driver who isnt gunning it.

Might aswell have said: "Ok, Mr Khan, you will receive no punishment for breaking the speed limit". What the fcuk is a grand to Khan? 42 days is an insult to the intelligence of the public.

If it was say, you or I, the book would be thrown at us 100%.

An amusing letter in Viz once went something like this:

What worse is his other sentence.

He over took in the wrong lane approaching a red light which he went through while over the speed limit. Hitting a guy who he could have killed. The guy got of lucky with a broken leg and Khan only got a 6 months ban. If I did that, I would be looking at 2 years.

This ban should have been increased because it's his second driving offence.

Does he have to re-sit his driving test again?

dont blame khan blame the silly cow who judged the whole thing.
if i remember rightly it was another silly cow who judged docherty last time he was up. the men are bad enough but women judges seem to get teary eyed very easily - i hope i'm up against one next time

Whats he think just b/c he's a superstar he can put everyone elses life into jeopardy?

The police had no evidence he was doing 140 or he would of got a much bigger ban i am sure.
It seems they mustn't have had the recording equipment or a camera in the car

Driving around at 140 mph is seriously endangering other humans.

Certainly for cars over 1.6 L, but having said that you can just as easily kill someone with a 1.1L - No the courts must be stricter, that has to be the only answer - What gets me is how variable sentencing can be for the same crime - I know a small town where the magistrates are really harsh while just a few miles away in the city they are far more leniant - I suppose you can see why, city courts see far more people and you cant hand out custodials to everyone - I think a persons earnings should be taken into account because a grand to Khan is like £10 or even less to many of us - If you are going to fine someone it has to hurt or there is no punishment - Anyone found guilty of dangerous driving which means putting the lives of others at risk, should get time - The more serious the offence the longer the sentence followed by a three year ban starting from their day of release and then a re test - Harsh punishments like that for all including celebs, boxers, footballers etc ned to be applied.
