Boxing in the New York City School District

Post by Dennis »

I just saw this article about boxing in the NY City School District. Interesting idea. We need to have more of this across the country. If it succeeds in NY, hopefully it will spread to other big cities. Then maybe it could spread to the smaller cities and towns.

Here is the site for the article:

We have several high school clubs in Southern California. It's a matter of each school district deciding to allow the sport and this isn't easy since they worry about (1) liability, (2) violent sport, and (3) whatever else schools worry about.

You must remember that we live in a lawyer-driven society.

The USA needs more of this

Just because a young kid doesnt make it to the Olympics, they can still learn that its wrong to carry a knife

Look at the Bronx in the 60s people had nothing but at last more of them believed in a fair fight one on one,not this gang B.S

In B-more one program is going into the schools and teaching a form of boxersize. The school doesn't want sparring but you can still teach skills and have a fitness program and if you see interest and talent,,,,,,,,,recruit.

Yeah, Mel but you also said something about lawyers. I sort of tuned you out at that point. :box: :D

I think if we can get more of these going it will really help amateur boxing in the U.S. I need to see if we can start something like that in Michigan. I don't want to volunteer though. I have enough on my plate, especially with protecting BoxRec from crazy Grandmas, men married to lawyers and now the new menace - religious zealots from the U.K. Wow, I feel like superman!!!

FOUL! FOUL! I object, this post is out of order....this whole website is out of order! . You do know what a lawyer and dust have in common? No matter how much you get them stirred up they'll wind up settling.

Good one Hal. I'm sure that you have a whole bunch since you have to deal with a lawyer everyday. Sometimes I feel the urge to let out a clever one when I look at that smug face in the mirror in the morning.

Dennis and NYBoxing, Thanks for the sites you listed. I have a meeting next week with one of the administraters of our county schools. We are personal friend and she has agreed to help me write a proposal to present to the county board of education that could incorporate boxing or some form of it, to the school cirriculum. At first I will target the middle schools and possibly do only one school as a control group. I will be using the article from the sites you put on the thread as programs that are currently going on. Athough we live in what some would call a rual area of the country, our crime rate is on a par with such cities a B-more. I think it got so out of control because no one acually believed that we had such a serious problem to begin with. Gang activity is so bad that they have formed task forces to deal with them in the police departments and the states attouney office. I expected to be turned away but I am hearing that they are very open to suggestions for help in any area. Just wanted to say thanks and if you know of anything else let me know.

Mel - please send it to me as well. I know a few people who might be interested in trying to get something going in some schools around here.

Dennis, I knew darn well that you could't stand to sit by and watch someone else attempt to give CPR to this sport, without helping. I'm so proud of myself. My questioning, my cross examination, and my closing did it. Go gett'em buddy and encorage anyone that that could do this right and in a way to present out sport in the right way, to do the same. Mel you just keep pumping out the info on existion programs and we can make this a program that many coaches may want to grab ahold of. Plus we will constanly improve our template. Maybe I'll change my sceen name to "idealistic". Defense rest!

Hal stop using the legalese or people might think you're a lawyer and not just married to one.

Osmosis, baby. I helped my wife study for law school and the bar. You don't have to be smart to read cue cards. I do have a good memory and growing up on a farm has helped me learn how to make good use of Bullsh#t, Mel already knows what my affiliation is with Harvard and Yale.

However, I actually did have fun with Hal in Houston - and his wife is a doll. Can't stand cigars, though.

I think your BS degree is a higher level than Hal's, however. Didn't you do your graduate work in BS, too? Oh - sorry - that was your law degree! :box:
