Macklin teams-up with Floyd sr.

Post by Rocky Balboa »

By Mark Vester

Matthew Macklin (20-2, 16KOs) has quit Ricky Hatton's Manchester stable, dropped trainer Billy Graham, and will now be trained by Floyd Mayweather Sr. in his Las Vegas gym. Macklin was in Hatton's corner when the fighter was knocked out by Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Dec. 8 in Las Vegas.

Macklin told Birmingham Mail that his career was in need of a new direction. He says Graham taught him a lot, but he felt like he was always in the shadow of Hatton.

"I watched and learned so much from the Mayweather camp and felt that it would be through them that my career would develop. I felt my career needed a new direction. I learned so much from Billy Graham but I felt in a way that I was operating in the shadow of Ricky Hatton. There was nothing wrong in that at the start because it was all part of the learning curve. But I felt that I wanted more than physical aggression," Macklin said.

"I am a boxer and that side of my skills has not moved on as I would have liked. Mayweather's boxing ability as well as his punching strength is something every boxer should dream of. I talked the situation over with my manager Brian Peters and we agreed that this is the way forward. To be involved in the best gym in the world has got to be the right place to be. Being close to Ricky Hatton and Billy Graham has been fantastic. I have learned so much from both of them but I now feel that the time is right for me to move on."

Macklin has a return date on February 2, fighting on the same card as unbeaten middleweight prospect Andy Lee. After the February bout, Macklin will head to the states to join Mayweather Sr. as they prepare for a British title shot.

"I am fighting in Limerick on February 2 against Frenchman Christof Karagoz and I will be training at the John Costello gym in Birmingham. After that I will be off to the States. There I will be preparing for a shot at Wayne Elcock and the British middleweight crown and getting my name up there for a European title bid," Macklin said.

"I would love to become to Birmingham what Ricky Hatton has become to Manchester. This is a big year for me. I have to do the business because I am no longer a 'potential'."
I think it's a good move for Macklin. Against Moore, for me, Matt shipped too much punishment, so hopefully Floyd sr will imprve his defense, movement, etc.

Macklin has potential. I hope he learns a lot from Floyd sr & that the move goes well for Macklin.

Floyd's done wonders with Guzman so good luck to Matthew. Hopefully GBP will sign him, they need a decent Middleweight.

Great to hear a British (Irish) boxer breaching out and leaving his cofort zone.

I personally don't believe Floyd Sr is just a trainer banking on his sons name either. Guzman has looked better, Dawson shined (in was it only 1 fight together?) and I thought he did a good job with Oscar.

Its exciting news and hopefully they gel as a team.

What does Macklin mean about spending time around team Mayweather though? And surely Floyd Sr had no involvement with Floyd Jr in the build up to his fight with Hatton?

Excellent move for Macklin, as much about getting out there for some quality sparring as working with Mayweather Senior. Good luck to him.

This could really throw him into the world mix..

A few fights and training under Floyd's guidance will do him good...

I was surprised watching one of his recent bouts, how much of a crafty, fluid boxer Macklin can be. Seems to have really worked on his craft after that slugging match with Moore. Maybe it's not too surprising him going with Floyd Sr.

Middleweight's not too bad right now, with Pavlik as champ, Abraham not far behind, and some quality Brits (Barker, Lockett) and Irish (Macklin, Lee, maybe Duddy). Hope to see some bleeding good fights soon.

Sounds like an excellent move for Matt, although it made for a great fight I was abit disappointed with the performance against Moore (certainly not the effort) I think he'd have stood a better chance if he'd have boxed abit more than he did and tried to keep abit of distance between.

If MM can take the best bits of Graham and Old Man Mayweather he won't be going far wrong IMO, it should give him a good perspective on things

Good news for Matthew and for Adrian too.

Adrian could make me out to look like some kind of boxing prophet after I gave him a mention in my article on Billy. Do you think he'll remember me when he's wadded? :TU: :box: :TU: :box:

Everyone seems unanimous in what a good move it is for Macklin.
Would it not also be a good move for Ricky?

Ooohhh!!! Steady Terry D!!!

I hope it's a good move but it would probably be better for him to base himself out there for a while. I don't think going over to the states to train and then coming back for fights (will Mayweather Snr be available to work his corner every time) is a great idea. Should improve him as a fighter but Roach hardly did wonders for AA did he

Macklin is a bright guy. He knew mistakes were made, fighting like his pre-fight ritual consisted of 20 E's and the new Wu-Tang album did not help. Then again neither did Jamie's canny approach.

Matt is a good boxer when he gets the jab going. He beats Duddy for my money. I hope they put that on in Ireland.
my only problem is i think lee, macklin and duddy will probably be kept away from each other, go different routes

Terry D wrote:I'm not a huge fan of Floyd Senior as a trainer, think he gives odd advice at times, but he also took a young amateur from The Phoenix ABA under his wing last January, on a trip to Vegas for the lad, and ended-up inviting the guy to live in Vegas and be trained by him.

The lad is now over there getting himself ready to do well in boxing and Floyd Senior is really putting himself out for the guy, he goes to a lot of trouble for him.

You really cannot knock that, well you could, if you wanted to look a right c*nt.

The lad is called Adrian Gonzales so look out for him.

Just goes to show that there's more to some people than meets the eye. Never judge a book by it's cover & all that...

Good to hear Floyd snr going out of his way for anyone, but even more-so for an amateur boxer. I bet Gonzales cannot believe it?

Macklin shipped too much punishment for me against Moore, so hopefully, Floyd snr will imprve his defense, slipping punches, head-movement, etc.

Matt has potential, so I hope the combination of his talent & what he (hopefully) learns from Floyd snr pays off for him. Matt's a likeable person, always come across a nice guy.

I'm not sure if it is a good move for Macklin. It seems like an awfully big change in styles at this stage of his career. I'm also somewhat concerned that this is his third trainer.

Anyway, good luck to the boy. Let's hope that MAyweather doesn't do to Macklin what he did to Bojado.

On another note, how does this affect people's views of the rumoured discord in the Hatton camp? This is not a good sign, I would say.

Mayweather is at least his fourth trainer: from memory he has been with Lynch, Harrison and then Graham previously.

Good luck to Matt - a real student of the game who is ambitious and wants to take his career as far as he can go with it.

It will be a great journey/experience for him.
