Who will be P4P no.1 after Floyd??

Post by boxbet »

If Floyd doesnt fight for 12 months will he still be P4P no.1? Also who will be no.1 after him? will it be Pacman, Marquez, Cotto, Calzaghe or Molitor?

Molitor?!

If so it will be the winner of Pac v Marquez, closely followed by a mix of JC, Cotto, maybe even Valero and Pavlik.

But I think Mayweather will be around for at least a year or two before retiring....

It doesn't matter as Mayweather won't be inactive for 12 months as he's fighting ODLH in September.

BTW - Molitor? You've been on Johnny Tapia's skag lad. He ain't even top 20.

Has to be Pacquiao or Cotto IMO

Molitors a good shout though hes a class act, probably the best UK import in recent times that I can remember along with Sergio Martinez

Ivan Calderon should be considered, but won't be. 2 weight champion, hope he gets a unification fight against Ulises Solis or Edgar Sosa.

any combination of those 3 would be great.

What about Israel Vasquez, could theoretically get up there in a year or two.

I think the main problem is it doesn't look like your going to have one boxer who is going to stand head and shoulders above the rest.

All the ones mentioned so far are excellent , but you could argue for ages if one is better than the other.
With Mayweather jnr , he is just better, no arguement.

It comes down to the competition they face, and if Cotto faces the other top welters then he will probably come out as P4P, as the welters have the strongest division.

Mayweather is very unusual in that respect however, in that he remains unbeaten. Even Ray Leonard had the loss to Duran on his resume by that stage, though Mayweather has never had to face anyone of that calibre. Hatton and Castillo are the closest he's faced and neither comes close. DLH is a very good, nay great fighter (in his era), but he's not quite of the calibre of Leonard, Duran, Hearns, Hagler.

Anyone else give Oscar a chance in the rematch?

No, i think Mayweather would beat him more convincingly on points.

In terms of talent, then Linares could be - but not if he doesn't get the fights... If Linares vs John could be made - then we have him probably in the top ten.

But at the moment, depending on when Floyd retires, then the Pacman vs Marquez II winner will be the #2 and would move up if Floyd retires after DLH. Although a serious arguement could be made for Calzaghe vs Hopkins winner - although both will probably retire before the Floyd vs DLH fight.

I've just got a feeling Oscar may do better. Oscar is having a tune-up this time, and I think it could be enough for him to nick a very close one.

The judges came within a whisker of giving it to him last time, even though I thought he lost clearly, who is to say if he paces it a little better he can't win it.

Tough fight to call, in some ways harder than match one.

Marquez if he beats Pacquiao, although someone like Chris John if he can get some big matches, would be closing in on the top 3.

I think the same, had DLH had a decent fight in May to get his timing and stamina back, I'd think this would be a closer fight.

Having Floyd Sr back will help him though. I just didn't get the impression him and Roach gelled.

He hasn't beaten anyone of genuine class yet. Winner of Marquez v Pacman for me if Floyd retired.

Top five my arse. He beats Michael Hunter and then makes a couple of defenses and now he's gonna be top 5 in a year. He won't even get a big fight to take him anywhere near the top five in the next year. Molitor is not even the best in his devision.

Rafael Marquez has a bunch of impressive victories and he doesn't even get in the top five on most p4p lists. Same with Israel Vasquez.

One of the obvious choices will replace Mayweather once he loses or retires. There is a reason the likes of Cotto and Pacquiao are right behind Mayweather, it's because they are damn good. There will be no Steve Molitor, Juan Diaz or Ivan Calderon overtaking them. Linares is an outside bet if he moves up and gets big fight or two, but I don't see that happening.

He's 24 and he's unified 3 belts, won 8 world title fights and beaten some decent fighters. He's potentially the next great P4P fighter IMO. Not in a year perhaps but he will be right up there I am sure in time.

I was one of a small minority who had Oscar winning the first fight. Many forget that even the judges had Floyd winning only by SD. Oscar blocked a lot of Floyd's shots with his gloves, despite what the punch stats were. If Oscar hadn't forgotten to jab in the later rounds, he'd have won comfortably.

I hope DLH's taking the re-match because he feels he can do better and not just for financial reasons. What weight is it at? Floyd's got a belt at 147, whereas DLH is currently without one. Not sure Oscar can make 147.
