Joe Louis in London England/1948 and 1966

Post by Brutu »

Anyone here know just how many different sparring partners that Joe Louis had participated with during his boxing exhibitions at Earl's Court Stadium in London England during the Health and Holiday expo in 1948?
Reportly they were to be"Royal Guardsmen".

"Novice South African Heavyweight" Phil Van Niekierk
sparred with Louis more then once during the February exhibitions.
Also former British Light Heavyweight Champion, Eddie Phillips.
These are the only two names I could find.Im not sure if they were Royal Guardsmen though.

Here is some footage of Joe Louis arriving in England February.24. 1948 ,
prior to his boxing exhibitions at the Health and Holiday exposition at Earl's Court.

Joe Louis made 78 appearences there at Earl's Court London England ,doing 26 boxing exhibitions,
3 times a day, including 2 rounds of boxing exhibitions, hitting the heavy bag, speed bag etc(or thats what the promoters had originally planned, as I believe they ran out of money for the expo at some point). Joe Louis weighed 225 lbs for the expo appearances.

here is a link to a short article with 2 photos of Joe Louis as a host
at the Pigalle gambling and supper club in London England in 1966,
also scroll up to see an article about the Floyd Patterson vs Henry Cooper fight, which Louis attended while there.
Joe's Louis friends asked him who he picked to win,Louis said Cooper
so his friends placed their money on Patterson to win.

Here is a link to a story that Joe Louis did not want published when Jet magazine interviewed him in 1966.
pp 60-61.
BTW this past April 12th marked the 30th anniversary of Joe Louis's passing,
scroll up to see a tribute article to him from the
April.30.1981 issue of JET.

1966 was the year that some say that Joe Louis first started showing
signs of a possible mental illness.
Here is a forelorn looking Louis at the Pigalle club September 1966.
