Ruslan Chagaev -- pro-exh bouts

Post by delisa »

Does anyone have any details or info on the two pro bouts Ruslan fought that led to his being stripped of the World Am title in 1997 -- also any info on when and by whom they were changed to exhibitions to allow him to continue his amateur career

I assume they are the two 1997 bouts on his record -- does anyone have the commission reports from Illinois for those bouts?

I also found this:

Former part-time pro boxer Ruslan Chagaev is hoping to mark his return to major amateur boxing with a gold medal at the Asian Games. The would-be heavyweight champion Chagaev, whose entry into the Asiad raised controvesy, was suspended earlier by International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) for 18 months in January this year for taking part in two professional fights in Chicago last October.

However, an AIBA legal commission decided in New York this spring that Chagaev's coach took advantage of his relative naivety and the Uzbek boxer's suspension was shortened to one year. The coach was subsequently banned for life but Chagaev has been given another chance to restore his reputation as one of the most feared heavyweight amateurs in the world.
