MMA - should the bouts count for amateur boxing

Post by Dennis »

OK, what does everyone think. I am talking about amateur MMA. They have been holding a lot of these events in Michigan and in surrounding states.

No I dont think so. I dont think it would be any different than a boxer who trains and spars for 5 years before having a single fight. That 5 years of training would not make the boxer an open level fighter, because its all about the experience you get in actul competion (at least says the rules) and since MMA and boxing are two different styles of competion, I dont think it should be carried over.

The boxing used in MMA is different anyways. The MMA fighter must box differently because certain boxing techniques can leave them open to takedowns, knees, kicks, etc. This is why they virtually never throw body blows, they must be in close and get a little lower which can result in a takedown or knee.

Nope - MMA athletes coming into amatuer boxing should start out as novices and should not be registered if they have received payment in the past. Hopefully, the LBCs are being rigerous about this.
