Rickey Womack

Post by Mimmy »

Im currently reading Evander Holyfield's book and whilst he is in the amateurs he mentions a rising star called Rickey Womack.

Ive searched his name through Boxrec and i see he was undifeated as a professional but committed suicide back in 1981.

Can anyone put any further information about this ex boxer and the reasons for his death. It seems a great shame that this guy was a promising young boxer but ended his life in such a way.

Womack killed himself in 2002, just after a long stint in jail. He was expected to make the light-heavy berth in Los Angeles in 1984 but Holyfield proved too mentally strong in the trials (a couple of times).
Womack, one of twins, was talented but lost his way.

Womack was a badass. I have several of his amateur fights on tape including three against Holyfield. Holyfield stated that Womack was so intimidating that he (Holy) would cry at the thought of having to fight him. Womack went to prison for armed robbery before he ever got his career on track and when he finally came back around 2000 he was as ripped as ever but age had eroded his skills and he quickly became depressed after a controversial win over Willie Chapman. He argued with his girlfriend one night and then blew his own head off.
