TUESDAY NIGHT FIGHTS

Post by elmersalsa »

I missed those Tuesday nights on USA TV...Do you guys remember the fights? They used to give good quality matchups. I liked the Sean O'Grady and the other brother of Marv and Steve Albert team. :TU: :TU: :TU:

I remember when they came to Galveston on a card where Larry Holmes was headlining.

I honestly think this was the best weekly boxing show in TV history. I still have no idea how they managed to be so consitantly good week after week. ESPN has been doing it longer, are a sports network with ties to Bob Arum and still can't be as competitive on a consistant basis as USA's shows were. Maybe because they used different promoters? My favorites were the shows from The Blue Horizon in Philadelphia. I sure did wish I could sit in the front row balcony. Looked like you were literaly on top of the ring! I still miss that show!

Bernard Hopkins fought Bilbert Baptiste (fighter I knew from San Diego) on that show. Rodney Toney who I also knew fought Joseph Kiwanuka on that show as well.

It was certainly the best in recent history. A very sad day when they announced that it was leaving the air. Quite a surprise as well, because as I recall they pulled pretty good numbers and it was profitable.

I liked how experimental USA was back then, they had a few cartoons, boxing, tennis, now all they do is air Law and Order reruns.
