Ryan Rhodes- What next?

Post by whicker »

What next for Ryan? A defence of his British belt, or a step up to European or world title challenge? It would be great to see him challenge for a world title again, I have a feeling he could do it this time.

Pryce looks a natural fight, and one I would really like to see happen.

Ditto - would be a great fight though I think on current form Rhodes could well do a number on Pryce. It would be great to see him get a world title shot but he'd need to beat a ranked opponent first and here's some food for thought - Anthony Small is ranked #15 with the WBA... :o

The other thing, too - its not like Rhodes is an old fighter- for sure, he isn't the young prospect he once was, but never the less he is only early 30s- thats nothing nowadays. I think the fact that he started young means that people (specifically- Sky Commentators) tend to think of him as maybe older than he is.

Ryan rolled back the years on Friday night and looked rejunivated at 11st.

He is still defensively lax but his unorthodox style and KO power were in full effect.

Would be nice to see him go on a run from here but he will always have that fragility about him I reckon.

Look forward to seeing his next fight though!

The camp's got an open mind, but the natural match up is Rhodes v Pryce for the British and Commonwealth but let me make a prediction.
Pryce will vacate and get a World Title shot because I just can't see Pryce wanting a pierce of Rhodes right now.
Maybe Rhodes will fight for the vacant Commonwealth next.
Just my view.

Cannot see Pryce getting a title shot unless he is miraculously stored as WBO mandatory or something.

I'd like to see Pryce-Rhodes winner could really go after a European Title shot then.

Hi gents,

I am far too traditionalist for my own good really: I'd say Ryan should be looking for Commonwealth, EU and EBU. He's been Intercontinental champ (of two different bodies) before but if he could grab one for an easy ranking along the way then why not?

The main thing is he needs to be active, active, and active some more!!!

5 or 6 fights a year for a couple of years would get some pace going, hopefully grab all the neccesary titles/rankings, and could get him a title shot in 2010 when he'd still only be 33(?).

There's too much "one good win, bring on a world title shot" these days - and it was exactly this rushing business which "ruined" his career when he was in his early 20's. If he never gets another world title shot, at least he'd complete his set of belts with Commonwealth and EBU before a big payday fight and retirement...

Couldn't agree more, TMK.
As for as I'm concerned (for what its worth) he should defend this title next, hopefully within 8 to 10 weeks, then seek the Commonwealth strap.
If Pryce moves on before then, so what ? If he takes the fight, great.
Thereafter, there is the possibility of an excellent match up at Euro level, because I really do hope Jamie comes through that route.
After that, then surely the winner deserves a proper shot at World level.
The one thing that could not be pointed at either Moore or Rhodes would be that they haven't taken the traditional route to secure their ranking / chance.

As has been said throughout the thread, Pryce and Moore are the fights I'd like to see Ryan in. On Fridays form I'd give him a very good chance in both fights

Sorry Stu having read my response it reads as though I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but I do respect your opinion.
Fact is, the WBU strap is vacant.
If Pryce doesn't face Rhodes I expect Warren to create a WBU title fight for Pryce then Rhodes to fight for the vacant Commonwealth strap.
That way Warren can't lose - because I expect both to win in that scenario.
If they face off, someone has to lose, don't they ?

I can't discount any of our top 3 154 pounders. IMO the divison, on a world level (none of the world champions even in a top 20 P4P list), isn't great and I can see at least one of them challenging for a major belt within 12-18 months.

I agree with most posters, Pryce v Rhodes is the next logical step for both.

I think it is exciting times. There are some big money match ups out there -domestically with Pryce and moore. I respect both of those guys enormously -never taken an easy match in their lives, but I think Ryan has the beating of them -the most natural talent of the three and the heavier hitter. I think there is also quite a few beatable names in the top 10 in the division like Yuri Foreman -very padded record if you ask me.Will be very interesting, I think.

Has to be Pryce, I'd give him a chance in that one.

Ok i was a Rhodes doubter, now i'm not. I said his chin would let him down, he proved me wrong against Lockett, and in the fight against Woolcombe he showed power and skills.

So i'm sorry for doubting you Ryan :box:

As for his future fights, as everyone has said Pryce would be the natural match, but i can't see it happening soon.

EBU title holder Baysangurov has a mandatory against Jamie Moore, so that might be an aim to get the winner.
The EU title is held by decent frenchman Jimmy Colas, its maybe a lightly regarded title, but a winnable fight for Rhodes.

I think every promoter is going to be trying to get Verno Phillips to defend the IBF title against their boxer, as he's a good but not that good champion.
the other title holders Vernon Forest and Joachim Alcine would cost a bomb to defend in this country.

Would Alcine cost that much to come over? I had an idea in my head that he was not very popular.

He hasn't appeared on a SN show for nearly 2 years.
No mention of him or his win on FW's website

Rhodes looked in great shape for the first time in forever. What about Anthony Small?

Now that would be a fun fight....

Beagleboy,
Let me assure you Rhodes is still with Warren.
Discussions of sorts have already begun about what comes next.
Warren lost the purse bid for this one, hence a Maloney show.
Warren rarely makes comments about other Promotor's shows.
What is it you're trying to say ?
Stop being an arse.
Witter has been promoted by golden boy for 4 years - and is yet to fight under that banner !
I can list you numerous boxers tied to Promotors who haven't fought for that Promotor for a while.
That's boxing - it's all down to who wins the purse bids.
Before you say it, Warren did bid for Rhodes v Woolcombe, and just missed out.
Maloney put an excellent bid in.

I think the problem is that Rhodes, in a higher class than the Woolcombe's of this world, will get exposed sooner or later because he hangs his chin out like a novice. Whilst I suspect its too risky a fight for either man, Pryce would be entertaining - as for that matter would Jamie Moore, with or without the European.
